Definitely go and watch a reasonable quality live game - you'll be surprised how much you've taken on, and how much more you'll engage with the game. Loving this!

The good thing about watching a rugby game on tv is that the ref's are mic'ed up. So you get to here their decisions, often it is easier to pick up on the rules of most gameplays just by watching a tv game. The ref and the commentators often comment on the reasons for fouls and reasons for gameplay.

Just jump in and watch a game.

Guys, the women's six nations tournament is just about to start. I'm sure the games will be live steamed somewhere. England v France would be the pick of the lot but any game will give you a good understanding of what's going on.

The oldest annual International tournament, the Six Nations (England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, and Italy) just finished this week, but this weekend the Women's version of the Six Nations begins. It would be great for you to watch some of those games. I am a lifelong England rugby fan who got into women's rugby a few years ago, and I love it! It's very competitive and played in the right spirit of the game. It starts with two games on Saturday 22nd, and the third game on Sunday 23rd.

What you are watching is like half speed low impact practice play so they can practice plays and actions against plays thats why you can see mostly clearly . If you played at full speed all the time you will have a hard time seeing any issues or ways to improve a play. Its a good way to show things to people that are not catching everything thats happening in a way its like when you watch a sports replay they almost always slow the footage down so you can see more

To answer your question on the ruck. The situation is fluid with each player on both teams trying to judge if and when to join the ruck. Each team will have a few players in position to join if necessary but they will try to avoid doing so until needed because every player tied up in the ruck is out of position to join the play when the ball is released. The team which wins the ball using the least players then has a temporary numerical advantage for their attempt to drive forwards and force a breakthrough. Their job is made easier if they can suck more of their opponents into the ruck because the remaining players have a larger area to defend.
