The first video on gardening in sand and concrete rubble at West Dean answers some additional questions such as 'do you plant in the sand or are the roots in the soil?' (the roots are 2/3rds in sand/ 1/3rd in soil approximately) For the full first video, see https://youtu.be/dBJgqdq8rDI and for a post with info from both videos, see: https://www.themiddlesizedgarden.co.uk/sand-garden-bold-new-trend-resilient-garden-design/

This lady should have a tv garden show. She’s old fashioned (in a positive way), and speaks eloquently.

Thanks so much for going back and asking our questions! Loved seeing the gardens in a different season too. Fabulous video as always.

This interview was brilliantly done. It's so satisfying to hear someone talk with this depth of knowledge.

This is great to combat increasing drought conditions and saving water 💦

I dug half my lawn up early spring and replaced with gravel...
I have been amazed at how fantastic it has been.... The plants have thrived and my garden is still full of colour...
Definitely a good option for smaller, flat gardens...

I garden by the sea, so seams of sand run through my garden. The wind also restricts the choice of plants. I agree totally that edging the grass next to the bed is most important.
After watching last year’s “sand and gravel” videos I was most inspired and improved my garden beds which have very few weeds this year, with shrubs that have heightened canopies to make an impact and healthy growth beneath. Thank you Alexandra for all the inspiration and knowledge you bring to us gardeners.

I love this...I garden in the high desert of the western U S and this is how our gardens look.

A thousand thanks for the update. Last year video was extremely helpful and an inspiration on how to fix some problems in my garden. Using materials left on site after my house renovation I have already built a rubble/gravel raised bed and I have many of the plants shown in Tom’s sand garden, including the tamarix and the bronze fennel. 😊

I love his key point (which he said differently) which to me was that gardeners have to remove ego from the equation - they are not necessary to the success of plants but they can assist mother nature in achieving the garden they wish for…
