Don’t want to go to the top of a hill either because that’s where the wind will be the worst. Half way up a hill is best. The hill will block some of the wind and you avoid the cold air down in the valley.

I thing a hot water bottle one of the most sensible items to carry with you, they can also be work when walking not just sleeping. Also you can fill a flask full of boiling water and half way through the night refill the hot water bottle again.

Husband used one medium rock, heated in fire wrapped in alum foil and then in a large towel or part of wool blanket and place in foot of sleeping bag. Slept out at minus 32 and slept very well---used other bottom insulation. Be carefull or bottom of bag may scotch or even melt a bit.

My brother and I used to duct tape big cardboard boxes and big heavy duty black trash bags and camp out on our property when we were kids.we stayed warm and dry early fall.
