China’s Strangest Hobby? Why Do Chinese People Play With Walnuts They Don’t Eat?!

👐 Why do Chinese people “play” with walnuts instead of eating them? 🇨🇳 Why are collectible walnuts so popular in Beijing — from elderly men to school kids? 💰 And how much would you pay for the perfect pair of Chinese walnuts? 👐 In China, these are called wenwan walnuts — walnuts chosen for their shape, texture, symmetry, and how beautifully they change color after years of handling. 💸 Some pairs cost just a few dollars. Others can cost hundreds or even thousands. 🤔 But what makes one pair more valuable than another? Why do people spend years rolling the same two walnuts in their hands? And what’s so satisfying about watching them slowly turn darker and shinier? 🌳 To find out, I went to Laishui, one of China’s biggest production centers for collectible walnuts, where an entire industry has grown around farming, matching, carving, selling, and even livestreaming walnuts. 🏮 Then I came back to Beijing and visited Panjiayuan Market, one of China’s most famous antique and collectibles markets, to see how Beijingers actually shop for them. 🤲 After watching this video, do you want a pair of walnuts of your own? And what shape would you choose? ✨ Welcome to one of Beijing’s most surprisingly addictive traditions. 📕HUGE NEWS: My Beijing Food Guide PDF is finally LIVE!
