  There are over 20 major underwater vehicle tunnels and dozens of transit tunnels primarily clustered around the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Great Lakes in the U.S. There is no exact, static global tally for every single underwater tunnel, but records indicate there are at least 150 to 200 major, notable underwater transportation tunnels in the world outside of the United States. When factoring in smaller utility, water-supply, and local rapid-transit tunnels, that global estimate scales into the hundreds. Ever heard of the Chunnel between England and France? &nbsp;We rode the Seikan Tunnel, an underwater bullet train tunnel in Aomori, Japan, which connects Japan&apos;s main island of Honshu (starting in Aomori Prefecture) to the northern island of Hokkaido. Spanning 53.85 kilometers (33.46 miles) with a 23.3-kilometer (14.5-mile) segment beneath the seabed, it is the longest railway tunnel with an undersea segment in the world. &nbsp;The ferry used to take 7 hours to pass from one side to the other, but now it&apos;s down to 2 hours. &nbsp;Those ferries are now museums.
