How South Korea Built a $20 Billion Wall Across the Sea

33.9 kilometers of wall. Not on land. Across the open sea. 6-meter tides. Twice a day. 401 square kilometers of the Yellow Sea sealed shut. $20 billion. 19 years. And the current through the final gap hits six meters per second — fast enough to rip 10-ton boulders off the seabed and roll them downstream like gravel. This is the full engineering breakdown — every problem, every solution, every number. They stripped 20 meters of unstable tidal mud from the seabed to reach stable clay, dumping 3,000-ton barge loads of gravel into foundation trenches during 30-minute tidal windows before the current buried the work again. Divers in commercial helmets levelled the gravel bed by hand in brown water with six meters of visibility. The dike itself is an earth embankment — 290 meters wide, 54 meters tall, most of it invisible below the waterline — built from millions of cubic meters of dredged sand pumped behind 26 kilometers of geotextile tubes. Each tube had to be filled and pinned before the rising tide collapsed it. The riprap armour layer was placed stone by stone by crane — one stone washed out starts a cascade that exposes the sand core to the sea. The closure of the final two gaps nearly ended the project. As sections grew and openings shrank, the same tidal volume squeezed through less space. At six meters per second, loose rock tumbles away. Gabion bags — wire mesh sacks filled with mixed stone — were the breakthrough. They deform, interlock, and hold where loose rock fails. Both southern gaps had to close simultaneously. If one closed first, the remaining gap became physically unconstructible. On April 21, 2006, hundreds of dump trucks on both crests dumped rock and bags at both gaps during every slack water window, raising the sill centimeters per tidal cycle until the current could no longer move the stone. Guinness World Records certified it as the longest man-made seawall on Earth. 500 meters longer than the Dutch Afsluitdijk that held the record for 78 years. Behind the wall, the sea becomes land — pumps drain seawater, dredgers fill the space with sand, and a city for 700,000 residents rises on former ocean floor. But the wall carries a cost no budget covers. 400 square kilometers of tidal flats that supported 300,000 to 570,000 migratory shorebirds every year — gone. The great knot declined 93 percent.
