Am only new to baseball but Alonso seems like a class act and how the Mets fans responded to his return was genuinely a nice moment and tells you he is a good man.

I was at the game last night, the fans went batshit and it will be the only time in my sporting event career that I get to see an opposing player giving a curtain call at an away stadium and getting a standing ovation. It was amazing

Alonso’s 300th homer against the Mets AT CITI FIELD was the highlight of the Mets season. EPIC

It was exposed the second it was revealed they didn’t even make him an offer. Stearns should have been fired in April.

I will say David Stearns is a man for his time. Meaning he his represenative of what a modern GM/President in Baseball is. And that can be good, and that can be bad. His approach is centered on defining the Game by analytics, trying to get the most from spending less if possible, building up the farm system. Good, those aspects are a strength. The Mets spent big on Soto, Lindor, Bichette. Stearns thought it was a good bet to get some salary-cost back by parting ways with Alonso. He was betting Alonso best years were done. This season, that bet blew up in Stearns' face (we will see how those other years play out). People will fixate on that mistake. But, I think Stearns' greater mistake was constucting a roster where so many players were playing out of position. Bad defense. Sabotoging his contended goal of run prevention, by the way. He seduced himself into thinking the analytics would prevail over a time-honored fundamental philosophy of putting players in their best position on the field to play their best defense. Baseball players who have grown up playing mostly one position in their careers are not Chess pieces on a board. They are human beings. They don't change who they are in a short amount of time for no better reason than you want them too. But, that may be hard for numbers guys to accept. So, that stunt, that's a data-driven guy trying to be too clever by half. Data-driven guys love to be clever, and love to hear people tell them they are clever. It's a vanity. So, he was self-seduced into being "clever". Delusion. Bad, those aspects are a flaw. So, from this year he will have to learn from these mistakes, a bit of humble pie to reset some of his approach. To be better. Better for his employer, the Mets and their fans. Be smart. But don't be clever. Because all of us...you, me, everyone who has ever existed...has to understand you are NEVER as clever as you think you are. A rule of life. And in so many ways, what is Baseball but a metaphor of life?

Mets fans love Pete (no past tense). Imagine what those 35 HRs would have looked like in that lineup this year. When you’re a championship organization, you don’t care what a guy does in 3 years.

I’m not one hundred percent sold on Pete Alonso’s costly contract
demands. But, the Orioles offer to him should have been matched by
the Mets, giving that they were the only team he ever played for. While
I think Pete is overpaid, but so are several players on the team. Keeping
him around should have been a business decision as it could send the
wrong vibes to the other players on the team as it relates to their future.

Most athletes are douchbag elite pigs. Alonso couldn’t be any further that. Dude has a blue-collar attitude and plays his ass off every night/every play. As good a player as he is; he’s probably a better person.
