Where do you think Project Robot and The Last Guardian belong on the timeline?

I like the idea that the games have been coming out in reverse chronological order. Each new game being further into the past would be an interesting twist on the order of story telling.

The pre-Columbian-inspired architecture is also common to all three games

my favourite meta-link between the games is in the use of the R1 button: holding Yorda's hands in ICO, climbing up the colossi in SotC and interacting with Trico in The Last Guardian. It is the core of the gameplay and it encodes the uniqueness and poetics of each game.

The first video of yours I EVER watched was a Shadow of the Colossus one. It feels so surreal to catch you posting another one after what feels like YEARS

Please never stop making SOTC content, our fandom is so small and it's hard to find deep dives like this. Keep it up!! 🥰

Awesome Max! Probably your best Team ICO video to date!

The only technology we see in ICO is at the main gate which has those two spheres on either side that become energised. They resemble the 'Master of the Valley' so I can now see them as some kind of lost hi-tech engine as you mentioned.

So SOTC > ICO > TLG > Project Robot seems to me to make most sense. By this state in the timeline they had mechanised the raw energy of Chi to power enormous robots to do the work of the civilisation, perhaps they had Chi power plants (like our nuclear reactors) and something went wrong - one exploded causing a huge shock wave?

Yet, I'm glad you mentioned Project Robot as an earlier civilisation that predates SotC, that can also make sense. Until we have more info about PR we won't know for sure.

Don't know how much this helps, but the Chinese word chi/qi/气, while it is technically correct to call it "life force" is literally translated to breath, or breathe, or air. It's brought up in martial arts and tai chi because they're training you so that when you get punched in the gut or chest, you don't get winded.

Small edit: It's also why chi is referred to as the literal breath of life, cause part of the idea was basically "when we stop breathing we die, so clearly it's very important to have"

I think Project Robot being first in the timeline makes sense down to thematic consistency: one theme throughout the trilogy is the idea of civilizations long gone. In Ico, while the practices of the horned boys being sacrificed is still going "for the good of the village", the castle itself is in disarray, disrepair. The Queen herself is trying to extend her life long after its due date. Obviously both Shadow of The Colossus and The Last Guardian deal with the civilizations of The Forbidden Lands and The Nest being gone for years. It would be DOPE if it turns out that the quadrilogy itself is about a seemingly highly advanced civilization (you have to be advanced to create Colossus-sized mechs/robots) being destroyed and the world being taken over by natural powers like magic.

It also seems more like Fumito Ueda to create an overarching story about nature retaking technology rather than technology overtaking nature. He seems to place nature on a higher pedestal than technology, so it would fit more to his sensibilities to do a story that begins in an almost cyberpunk dystopian setting and ends in a fantasy setting.
