The one I ate the most, without any question, was candy cigarettes. There was a corner store two blocks from my school, and a pack cost about a dime, and I would tap the pack against my palm exactly the way my father did with his real ones, because that was the entire point and everyone knew it. Nobody — not the store owner, not my teacher, not my parents — ever said a single word about it.

The thing I did that would horrify a modern parent: my best friend and I shared one candy necklace for an entire day at the community pool in the summer of 1975. One necklace. Two kids. Pool water. We took turns wearing it and biting beads off it until it was gone, and we both lived, apparently out of pure stubbornness.

And I remember the red M&Ms disappearing. My brother told me it was because red ones caused cancer, which was wrong, but we believed it for about ten years because nobody ever explained anything to kids in 1976.

So tell me. Two things. The candy from this list you ate the most. And the one thing you did with candy as a 1970s kid that would horrify a modern parent. Both. I read every single one.

👇

I ate red dye in candy and hot dogs, ate candy cigarettes and bubblegum cigars, wax lips and everything that is now illegal. Drank a lot of water from the garden hose, you just had to run water through the hose to get dirt and spiders out. I'm 69, still healthy and will drink water from the hose if I'm outside and thirsty.

Anybody remember when Jolly Ranchers made the Cherry sticks, the fire sticks, the Apple sticks, the grape sticks? I love those things
