IMO the term "socializing" should be removed from training vocabulary and re-labeled as "de-sensitizing / de-triggering / de-reactioning" training...just like you do with horses, so new owners comprehend and understand the training purpose

I've been warning people for years that from about 6 months to 2 years dogs have the energy of a puppy, the size ang stamina of an adult, and the brain of a turnip. Manageable, but not to be ignored. My best agility dogs were 2 time losers surrendered for being too wild.

I have the happiest memories of my American Bulldog in this phase of his life. "Boss, I own this chair". "No buddy, Boss owns all chairs". "Boss, I own this visitor". "No buddy, the visitor owns the visitor". "Boss, I found a dog, Im adding it to the pack". "No buddy, thats someone elses dog, put it back".

I adopted my first dog from the local shelter during her “teenage phase”. Had no idea about it until now lol. I had her for 14 years until she passed this past October. I researched online for weeks before adopting a dog and I was constantly online looking for training advice and I took her everywhere with me to get her socialized with dogs and humans and have exposure to as much stimuli as possible. I made my fair share of mistakes, but she went from being so nervous she would pee and try to flee from new people to being fairly confident and unafraid to approach new people. RIP Gracie- I miss you everyday ❤

So socializing, a dog is desensitizing the dog, getting it out in society, letting it see and experience all kinds of different things under close supervision and obedience, got it

STRUGGLING DOG OWNERS: Dog training can be challenging for EVERYONE. Stay strong, consistent, and remember that building/changing habits takes time, even for humans. You've got this! 🐶❤️

Thank you for talking about socialising in those terms. So many times people say my dog is undersocialised because she, for the most part, ignores everything around her and focuses on me. Just because she isn't actively seeking out people and dogs doesn't mean she doesn't like them or is scared, she just see's them as part of the scenery.

Great video. I found a dog in the local park, after attempting to locate her owner without success I decided to keep her as the shelters were all full beyond capacity. She was about 9 months old and a complete terror. Nothing was safe, she would go into bags and steal the contents but she also had the sweetest disposition of any dog I have ever known. I got an x-large, x-strog crate, she was 60lbs, and crate trained her. That was 3 years ago. As I type this she is asleep in her bed. Her best friend is a 9 lb cat, another stray that just showed up. She remains a sweet, and loving dog but now knows how to walk on a leash without pulling and sits and waits to see if she will get pets when she sees a stranger. I don't know how I got so lucky to be the one she chose that day but I'm glad she did ❤

I could never give up one of my dogs no matter how much trouble they gave me, they're honestly family and you can't give up on Family

Greetings from Germany: Will this is is one of your best and most comprehensive videos when it comes to explaining the essence of dog training and especially the challenge of teenage phase impact. Every single statement is so true, so valid. I also like the way you describe examples to provide pictures to your statements. Every millimeter of „own decision making“ which is not seen by dog handlers, leads exactly to loosing control over your dog. And people don‘t realize it or don‘t see the connection between their unclear communication and their dogs behaviour. Really fantastic content. I wish you many more clients taking your classes online or in your training center. I have been following your channel for years since you work independently. The fact that you explain so much context makes a big difference to other dog trainers. 👍
