I had kind of a funny interaction with my friend's dog the other day. They just got a "golden doodle" puppy, and he's telling me "Oh, the dogs gonna be really excitable when you first come in, blah blah." And his wife (who hasn't known me as long) says, "Honey, she doesn't need all of the instructions, she's an experienced dog owner." And he says "Oh, right." Lets the dog in, the dog is jumping up on me and freaking out, and I'm not acknowledging it, turning my back to it, etc. He says, "Oh, once you start petting him, he'll calm down!" I just laughed and said, "If you want him to do this for the rest of his life, keep doing that. I'm waiting for him to calm down before I acknowledge him." His wife was just like, "See, I told you so!!"

I'll have to tell him that "You get what you pay!" tip!!

I got my golden retriever 18 months ago. For about 3 months before I bought her, I was watching all your videos and it made training her so successful! We now have the most placid obedient girl and it's all down to your videos giving such clear instruction. I'm now just in the process of finding a dachshund to add to our family. We've had a dachshund before who was absolutely amazing! I'm just researching all your videos again to refresh my memory. Thank you for the video's Will, they really are helpful!

For those wondering about the free courses, I had to go to the website in my browser and found the free courses under training. The link on the video took me to his paid courses.

When training my border collie to be calm and go to his spot and stay there while I attend to my studies, he needs roughly 2 hours of exercise/mental stimulation beforehand. I give him that and I get at least 2 hours of peace and quiet studying. It is so simple. The one thing that worked very well for me was to remove any toys that stimulate him during his downtime period. I chuck his favourite toys into another room, close the door, sit down, he copies and will relax until I am done. This gets progressively easier as the day progresses. Even a border collie needs proper rest regardless of the myths ;) .

Agree it's get what you pay for. I got a kelpie, which I know is a high energy dog, but also one that is very keen to do what you want. They have a brain that needs to be exercised though. So many people think and say they must be exercised - up to 5 km a day or more - WTFox! I play games with my dog that requires him to run around...and requires much less physical exercise from nearly 70 yo me! My dog gets the physical exercise, but both the games he plays and other things exercise his brain. He is such a happy dog. I got your 3 free rescue dog video's before I got the dog, of course, place training was there and it is the best thing ever. We have physical dog beds inside and outside the house, but I use a rubber back bathmat to make a mobile Place. It is the calm place, the safe place, it goes camping with us, it goes out for lunch or a drink with us...it's the best. And lastly I have to say that something I've noticed both with rescue and breeder purchased dogs is people who need to be needed. There are people who seem to be so glad that their dog has separation anxiety, that they are overexcited to see them after they come home - some will actually say they love that the dog can't do without them. My dog loves me, but I am so glad for him that he is able to stay at home for a reasonable period of time without barking, without chewing, without breaking out and going looking for me. The need to be needed by some people turns their dog into a hard to live with dog eventually. It's sad.

I completely agree with you about choosing the right breed of dog, after recently loosing a five month old puppy due to health problems, and having and older resident dog who was not coping with the loss, I found a great online quiz that matches a dogs breed traits with what you are prepared to offer to your companion and it definitely worked. I now have a 5 month old labradoodle based off the results and she is doing amazing. Don’t get me wrong she could be better but that’s just some things I need to work on but on the whole she is responding well to training and does what is expected for the most part. Also been watching your content for a while now and just wanted to say you are looking great man. As a Personal trainer myself, your transformation is amazing keep up the good work and as always I look forward to your new content.
