My Grandmother; Gertrude Madey broke her hip when she was 102. The home attendees stuck her in a wheel chair, because she was too old to operate on. She became despondent until her grandkids friends starting moving into the same home. She started to play cards with them. She died at 108. (Wynyard, Saskatchewan) 😅

Last year I was diagnosed with osteopenia and the med that affects the jaw was prescribed despite my doctor knowing I had had two major surgeries on my jaw for fibrous dysplasia when I was 22 and 36. The more I read about the prescribed med, the more disappointed I was in my doctor and decided not to take it. All this to say, that as the patient we have to do our research and sometimes make an alternative decision from what has been prescribed.

Another chance to extol the benefits of Olympic weightlifting for seniors. Dynamic lifts really loads those bones, plus builds muscle (esp fast twitch muscles seniors lose first), plus huge increase to balance. I lift 3 times a week. I’m 78. Was in a competition yesterday. Did well but can’t beat those damned 20 year olds!

I got diagnosed with osteoporosis this year at age 49. I've been exercising since I was 15 and taking calcium pills for 20 years. I still got it. I suspect it's because I'm a small woman with small bones, both grandmas had it and I didn't get hormone therapy for perimenopause (I'm still angry about this) until right after my 49th birthday. I started alendronate 3 months ago, so wish me luck.

Because this is so important to get ahead of in a timely manner, why aren't we doing DEXAs on perimenopausal women? I got my first DEA at 51 (last period at 48) and was diagnosed with osteoporosis. When my friends started asking their doctors about when to get their first DEXA, they were told around 60. Huh? Why isn't the recommendation for the first DEXA around 50 for a baseline and to start intervention early?

It's important to take vitamin d, k2, and magnesium together to keep calcium moving into the bones. Also exercise.. dancing, walking, lifting weights, eating leafy greens, fiber, and lots of protien.

Doing exercise 4 times a week with heavy loads is the best, my osteoporosis stoped, eating well and good dosis of vitam. D

I would hope doctors would tell their younger patients how important it is to do exercises that prevent osteoporosis. I am 82, and although I knew it was good to exercise, I didn't know I would end up with this if I didn't. Doctors are too involved in medications to treat symptoms than to give preventative measures. Of course, probably 50 % of people are too stubborn to put good eating and exercise into their lives. Last January, I fell twice, once in the kitchen and once in the living room. I didn't realize that my calf muscles had become weak because of the pandemic and then not getting on my feet more. My doctor sent me to therapy and now I am doing exercises at home, but I need to do some strength exercises so I am going to join a gym in the area. Thanks for your informative videos.

My sister had M.S. and her specialist told her that every M.S. patient she saw had low levels of Vit. D. My take away was that Vit. D. levels are critical in many diseases.

You need to SCREAM it louder about weight training. It’s sooooo important. I have osteopenia for a few years now (I’m 46) due to a bone marrow transplant and chemo at age 30 (leukemia). My dexa was not great in 2020 and got worse in 2022, so I started getting back into fitness lifting weights 4-5x a week more consistently for only 20-30 min, and my dexa 2 years later was basically the same and not worse. That’s huge. It’s def not enough so I’ve started HRT finally. I’m late to that bc of a flawed study. My gyno would be had me on it way sooner. Great video - ty! ❤
