  Senior software engineer here; I&apos;ve been a heavy open source contributor in the past and got into tech with the mindset of sticking it to the big companies and giving back to the community. <br><br>The Amazon driver scenario is creeping into software. We&apos;re understaffed, told to write agents for everything, and the demands are so far outside what&apos;s possible that we&apos;re trapped into using AI. The quality is terrible and the productivity is frequently superficial. There are some areas where it&apos;s helpful but the end result of the absurd workload and these flawed tools is 60-80 hour work weeks. I&apos;m tired, grampa.<br><br>If the typical software eng and the Amazon driver were working half the hours for similar pay nobody would be complaining, by Doctorow&apos;s observation about being consumed by the machine for the sake of depreciation is spot on.

  Cory Doctorow is so correct (on everything I&apos;ve seen him expound on so far) that he&apos;s a new force of nature. Definitely required listening (&amp; reading) for anyone in the tech and modern corporate spaces.
