  Attlee wasn't known for his oratorical or PR skills (unlike Churchill), but he was an outstanding PM, no doubt.

  He appears to have that emphysemic shortness of breath from a lifetime of smoking. Probably almost universal in old people of that era. But he made it to Churchill's funeral in 1965.

  This wonderful man, who transformed Britain for the better &amp; gave opportunities to millions who were previously shut out, was utterly reviled by the Right-wing press of the day. Only with the passage of time have his former detractors taken a more benign view.

  India’s independence is a great achievement… but… the NHS??? Come on!!! Too many great things to choose from. Best PM EVER!

  Atlee probably the 3rd or 4th best PM this country has ever had but certainly in terms of a peace time PM he was the most perfunctionary and diligent, and he was an almighty parliamentarian in terms of putting policies into practice/action ... although that might have been helped by it being immediately post-war and the huge need to get on with rebuilding towns, cities and industries and there was a lack of red tape and a huge collective national willingness to rebuild and have a country that was fit for a nation that was due a reward after 6 long gruelling years of almost total war
