I was at the James Taylor concert when he announced that he had gotten married that day to Carly Simon. Two of my favorite performers.

She actually spilled the beans many years ago, about who the song is about on a Aussie Breakfast show on 2UW that I listened to every morning way back in 1985, and I remember it well. The two morning show presenters Bazz and Pilko were actually debating who the song was about on air and decided to ring her for an interview, and so they did live on air.
And they had a list of potential candidates, for the song, which they playfully ran through one by one, (including mick Jagger) and she said it's definitely not about Mick, and the final candidate, was Warren Beatty which she hinted was the person, until they pressed her , and she laughingly admitted it was about him. In the years since, the story seems to have become a bit fudged by time, but that's what I clearly remember.

This video is like a textbook politician. Never answering the actual question that was posed and skirting around it long enough to bore everyone and make them lose interest.

Carly Simon was my favorite female vocalist from the 1970s.
Among her many songs, I like “Legend” the best.
