Does Poverty Exist in Monaco? Who Are the Principality's New Poor?

Does poverty exist in Monaco? Monaco wealth inequality, the real cost of living, and who gets priced out of the Principality, explained. More than 40% of Monaco residents are millionaires, according to the World's Wealthiest Cities Report 2025. So who are Monaco's "new poor," and what does poverty actually mean in one of the wealthiest places on Earth? In this episode, I break Monaco's economic reality into three categories that rarely get talked about together: 1) Cross-border workers, the roughly 65,680 employees and 6,000+ self-employed workers who keep Monaco running but live outside it, priced out by real estate that averaged €57,569/m² in 2025 (and over €120,000/m² in Mareterra) versus €8,000-10,000/m² in the surrounding towns. 2) Monegasques and long-established residents with fixed incomes, where the real question isn't "how much do you earn?" but "what do you own beyond your income?" 3) The disappearing middle class, families earning good, stable incomes who live well but aren't building wealth fast enough to keep pace with a place where scarcity itself has become the product, and where the gap between income and assets defines who's really getting ahead. I also look at how this happened: land reclamation projects like Mareterra, the rising banking entry threshold for non-residents, and a market that has shifted from luxury to something closer to ultra-luxury, and why the real question isn't "how do I live in Monaco?" but "how can I use Monaco to build my future?" This isn't a video about who belongs in Monaco and who doesn't. It's about understanding where you could fit into this system, and whether Monaco actually makes sense for your strategy.
