Wu Zetian made the classic autocrat mistake of not mentoring enough competent royal family members. This was especially evident with her female relatives. Aside of Princess Taiping no one was mentored. Its always interesting reading that most Tang emperors were weak & easily controlled. Under people like Wu Zetian it could be a positive but unfortunately it was usually greedy, corrupt, & incompetent people.

Frankly, her dad deserved his ending. He had the power to stop all of this at thousands of points along the way - he personally created the monsters that killed him by repeatedly choosing to enable them.

dang princess anle sounds like a historical figure you could easily make or derive a villain character from for a movie/show/book, like she is so interesting in a messed up way

1000 thank you for letting us know about women who are NOT Wu Zetian and Fu Hao.

I mean, given that a lot of female figures in that period of history kind of got written as tyrants by their male successors, I wouldn't be surprised if this was all heavily exaggerated. Seems very interesting tho haha

After thinking about it and listening to the whole story twice, I'm willing to bet Anle's "evil ways" are more than likely exaggerated. I have no doubt that she was spoiled and bratty, but the bird skit story was the nail in the coffin for me. It gave a bit of Marie Antoinette, "let them eat cake" the quote every one says but historically was never recorded but retold and immortalized in books and movies. <br>Either way, I really enjoyed the video, I always do. 😇

«If virtue does not match the position, then disaster is sure to happen.» Truer words have not been spoken. No matter how powerful one is, one should always rule with love and respect, for every living thing and person. If not, then they are not fit for power. Look at the world today. Ruled by greed and destruction and see what happens… Wow. This was an incredibly sad ending to the Red Makeup Era (I’m in love with this era, and also it’s name as you translated it for me, Ami. Thank you so much for that again! 😄🙏🏻❤️). All that work done by Wu Zetian and her incredibly talented female officials and scholars, ruined by greed for power. We see this happening over and over all over the world. Golden eras that then twists into horrific periods of violent power struggles. And so many things become lost to time because those who knew how to vanished so suddenly. We only rediscovered Roman concrete’s amazing ability to self - repair in 2023. Just now they finally solved the riddle of Greek fire. I hate to imagine what disappeared after the sudden collapse of The Red Makeup Era and Wu Zetian’s modern empire. But the wise historians fortunately wrote everything down. The rest of the world wasn’t so lucky. And now we are so fortunate that you Ami, translate these texts for us. Thank you! 😄🙏🏻❤️

Leaves me wondering… how much of this really happened ? How much is exaggeration written by the victors who were as much clientelistic and luxury-loving but happened to win, so they could paint themselves as the virtuous defeating the sinful.
