Watching it again, Marty also makes most of the major breakthroughs in the final stretch of the show. Rust and Marty have flipped in their life habits. Marty is sober, while Rust is numbing himself with alcohol and cigarettes. After the initial break-in by Rust to restart the case, Marty’s focus and intellectual curiosity have expanded. That combined with his better social skills make him the primary driver in the intellectual leaps as the case closes.

Reminder: there is a scene of genuine connection between Marty & Maggie when she’s interrogating him in their bedroom, trying to find out what’s going on with him, and he cracks a little and admits he feels lost in mid-life. This is a bit of a mis-direct, since he’ll say anything to avoid admitting the affair w/ Lisa, but there is still real truth and self-awareness. Maggie eats it up, since she’s been starved for a glimpse of his inner life and she immediately takes him to bed, in the best possible way.

Unfortunately, they are unable to build on this. Eventually, she raises her voice at him saying he used to be smarter (weird, right? Since experience should make him smarter… but he’s lost his curiosity about this aspect of his world — which I partly consider an occupational hazard of cops, detectives, judges, surgeons… they’ve all been burned too many times for giving the benefit of the doubt, being vulnerable).

Even at the very end, Martin was able to have just one beer. That was his only concrete claim. He never said he wasn't a filanderer.

When he's talking about the different types of detective, one of the ones he mentions is "the man possessed by ungovernable rage." Then they ask him what kind he is and he plays it off with a joke, but that's him.

Every 18-36 months i get a few videos on True Detective season 1 in my feed. It usually doesn't take more than 4 or 5 for me to watch the season all over again. That season was as close to a perfect series as you can get. Maybe along with The Americans.
Plus it turned me on to Townes Van Zandt. It didn't take long going through his song catalog to realize i had heard dozens of his songs without knowing it because they're always covered by other artists. Hell the first 2 Cowboy Junkies albums are 70% Van Zandt songs.

Excellent as always. It is interesting that Marty says exactly two things about his family of origin, both of them about his father specifically: 1) he was a Marine in the Korean war and never talked about it and 2) even when his father was dying and even though he was six inches shorter than Marty, Marty believed his father could "take him" ie physically dominate him.

Remember that when Marty gave that teen money to get out, Rust asked if it was a down payment.

What a fantastic video. You made me see new things in a series I’ve watched nine times. Really thoughtful, insightful. It’s always a bit shocking to find in-depth analysis videos on YouTube. Some absolutely brilliant banger lines, too - “in a flat land he needn’t see the shape of himself” and Marty buying anger in bulk, the cheapest emotion. A bunch more. Subscribed. I can’t wait to see the Maggie video.
