Prof Jiang is a bit ignorant about Africa. We don’t use fertilisers. They destroy soil.
Uganda is the food basket of East Africa. Soil is very fertile.

Sub-Saharan Africa doesn’t really consume wheat or foreign grains.

Video is a good medium for documenting a replica bloom iron furnace in operation. The “culture wars” now enter even though it was filmed 20 years ago, before the military dictators gained control of Burkina Faso and before Donald Trump won a presidential election here in the US. It’s obvious that modern steel is better, and therefore used worldwide today. Mao Zedong was stupid to force China’s peasants to make steel in their back yards.

But it’s not easy in any event. Practical knowledge of how to get such a furnace to work, down to music from flutes & drums to help motivate cooperative effort, preceded the explication of physics & chemistry behind it. Mass society boasting agricultural surpluses sufficient to develop the education, the organizational tools in government and private sphere that allowed the industry to scale up and improve its products, took thousands of human generations to arise out of what we call the Stone Age. Why an industrial revolution started in Europe first of all places, and whether it would have happened somewhere else otherwise, remain unanswered questions. We shouldn’t take our modern industries for granted as their longevity isn’t assured. We might have to make iron in furnaces like this again.

I am satisfied; Africans have been casting iron for a long time, and people don't want to believe it
