I’ve never heard a lineman call the pole claws grabbers in over 4 decades in the trade.

Greatly appreciate y’all’s dedication to these young men. If I would’ve had things “my way”, I would be 2 years outta line school and working in the trade. But things don’t always work out the way we plan or expect. That being said, at age 38, I’ll be getting a fresh start at a tech school here that partnered with the power company. Thanks for sharing info like this with guys like me that couldn’t attend your school. Appreciate ya more than you know

The most common way that winch line gets damaged - is from someone not very familiar with operating that truck - using it. Either they try pulling something using the winch on a hard angle, and the winch line rubs agaist the edge of those metal flares on the boom tip - OR - they allow the winch line to lay on ground, slack in the line builds up and then lays on top of boom, and then they fully retract the boom sections and close them on the winch line like a guillotine.

I got my crane ticket here in Australia which allows me to operate one of these even as a Linesman. We call them Peru here though. Harder and more dangerous job than it looks. A strain pole snapped in half while it's being straighten after storm damage. Nearly took out the operator controls and with it the operator could've had an x-arm in his chest. Hindsight we should've unstring it and then straighten it instead of doing it loaded with about 4 bays attached. Pure luck.

Day 1 of getting a new digger - you take that big wrecking ball of a hook off the winch line and put it somewhere no one will ever find it. In real life, you will do everything they teach you NOT to do with that truck. BTW - that auger works great being used as a support leg for the boom - to defeat the boom overload safety. 😊

He needs to learn the international hand signals. This is an example of bad signal training.

There's always one guy at work that can't stop talking as you're trying to do something. That guy is probably responsible for 50% of all people who forget to close a trailer hitch. These days - it's even worse - cause alot of these trucks are remote controlled. So that guy will of course - stand right next to you - and won't shut up as you're trying to do something.
