Perfect video to celebrate me paying off my $66K student loan debt earlier this week! This feeling is so freeing 🎉

I bought a house and was really stressed about money. I did a no-buy year and it was awesome. I deleted all social media apps and only used them in browser where I can use an ad blocker. I filtered all my emails so that I wasn’t getting sale notifications from stores.

I played a lot of video games from my backlog, knitted and crocheted projects out of yarn from my stash, started lifting weights, and dedicated myself to a sport. I was not 100% successful with my no-buy, but it did reframe my relationship with shopping and buying things.

I made the difficult decision to get a job as a dishwasher. Sounds awful, but it's 10 minutes from home rather than minimum 30- with fuel prices now that's a huge consideration. I don't have to worry about hair, makeup, clothes. And not being in an urban area (it's a country cafe), there is no 'just popping in' to any stores. I'm giving it a year and we'll see :)

I feel bad for the generations of young people who were never taught money management. It should be a required class in high school.

I was an awful impulse buyer for quite a long time. Then I got diagnosed with ADHD and figured out my brain was chasing the dompaine hit of buying something new. So what I've started doing that has helped me a LOT is I'll go to a store and browse around and when I see something I want, I pick it up and carry it around with me or put it in my basket like I'm going to buy it but I keep walking around the store. And after a while, when the dopamine dies down, I'm able to ask myself "do I REALLY need this right NOW?" And nine times out of ten, the answer is no, and I'm able to put it back and actually get a little dopamine hit in that on its own for resisting something I didn't need and save money :)

I bought Tiffany & co toggle bracelet for my birthday, I’ve wanted one for years. I was so unimpressed with it that I returned it and upgraded my MacBook, I am so much happier. It’s a refurbished one but better than the base model that just dropped in March.

I’m debt free for over a decade now, and I’m FINALLY giving myself a break and only working my shift this year… 40hrs a wk vs my usual 50-60. It’s so satisfying!

It hadn't occurred to me before watching this that the word 'budget' is a lot like the word 'diet' - if you instinctively recoil at the word, it's probably because you have a problem. Every adult has a budget just as every adult has a diet, it's whether you enjoy it, and whether it's good for your health and sustainable in the long term.
