I think another way of describing Ms. Birbalsigh's category of "traditional values" is simply "virtues": respect, responsibility, courtesy, hard work, justice, etc .

Ms. Birbalsingh's Michaela School is set up in an old office block in Wembley, next to what was once the worst social housing estate in London. She has created, through her energy, a free state school for London children, that is the envy of many parents & teachers.<br>She's about to start another Michaela Community School in Stevenage.<br>Knowledge is Power (Discipline is controlling that power).

as a (homeroom) teacher in Taiwan sitting at my desk, after school, listening to this speech, I can't help but feel stunned by her passion. Feeling a bit watery in my eyes also😂

I am a fan. She is fantastic! I have battled administrators for years regarding admission standards. I was told to lower standards to encourage minority applications. I refused, but I decided to keep our admissions standards but offer help on how to achieve those standards. Results: Our program mirrored the population of the area. They all passed their boards, obtained a license, and secured employment.

Fantastic talk, fantastic woman. "Suicidal empathy" and "toxic compassion" are concepts that come to my mind listening to this. I hope for a future where we stop doing politics with education and start doing what just works.
