It became the Champions League in 1992.<br>UEFA Cup: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; League Runners-up / Next-best spots. It became the Europa League in 2009.<br>Cup Winners&apos; Cup: Domestic Cup Winners only. It was abolished in 1999 and taken over into the UEFA Cup. <br><br>SInce 1992 the CHampions League only gradually opened spots for 2nd, &nbsp;3rd best team etc of the domestic (top) leagues. For example the 2nd place of every top league was not allowed before 1997, 5 years after introduction of the Champions League. So you can imagine, how different the meaning was. In the Uefa Cup you had several teams of every top league, meaning always Barcelona or Real Madrid and so on. And the Champions League was top top level at that time, but also less teams. And the Cup Winners Cup was funny, since total random 5th division teams from Scotland could play against a team like Inter Milan.

  Jorge Costa, a true captain... died at 53 yrs old in 05/08/2025 from a heart atack... too soon... RIP. I´m not a porto fan, but jorge was something.. and after he retired he coached my team Académica de Coimbra

This has been exacerbated by the monetization of foreign fanbases in the 21st Century and the monetary influence of foreign governments in clubs.<br><br>PSG was a middling club in France until Qatar started funding them, now the rest of the French clubs can&apos;t compete.<br>Bundesliga has always been the Bayern show.<br>Italy is usually dominated by Inter, Milan or Juve.<br>Spain is the Real Madrid vs Barcelona show with the ocasional Atletico Madrid year here and there.<br>Premier League has the most money so it gives the ilusion of parity, but the the biggest clubs always come out on top since they have decades of fanbase building and monetizing, the exceptions are Manchester city and Chelsea that bought their way to the top with UAE and Russian influence respectively.

  Yeah, social media is one reason why only the same names are talked about. Repititive glorification of the same teams for clicks. But it was never normal to have a 7 times in a row champion, Lyon was an exception because League A was always a little bit off. Even in the Bundesliga Bayern only rarely became 3 times Bundesliga champion in a row, not even two times. <br><br>But two things changed then. The man who turned champions into serial champions was Pep, at first Barcelona, than Bayern and City. &nbsp;That&apos;s why people often say he destroyed those leagues, due the reduced competition. The other thing were the inventors which brought in a form of blasphemy. At first im Chelsea 2002, then City in 2009, then PSG 201 and 2016 or sth like that the Premier League got its major tv deal, which is why that league became better since then. So more money in the game means more concentration, monopoly and discrepancy between poorer teams and the top teams.
