Pomme is apple (Apfel), so 'pomme de terre' literally means 'earth apple'. That's exactly where the German word 'Erdapfel' (potato / Kartoffel) comes from!

Long bread is a french thing! 🥖<br>In Germany we prefer a tasty big saussage! 🌭 The best opener 10 minutes before you enter the next Döner Shop 🌮 on your way to a real german Restaurant. 🍲🍖🥩😋😂😂

German language didn't take "Pommes" from Canadian French, but from French French or Walloon, where they say "pommes frites". You always pronounce the last S as if there was a liaison to the next word starting with a vowel ("Pommes" or "Pomm-frits").

Oh, Pommes de terre frites! Du XVIIe au XIXe siècle, le français était la langue de la cour et de l'enseignement dans de nombreuses principautés allemandes. In France, they are usually called “frites” for short these days.

"Matjes" is a special kind of soused herring and we LOVE it here in northern Germany on a roll with onions, remoulade sauce and maybe cucumber.. greetings from the baltic city of Kiel

Pommes frites -> Pommfritz, Pommes, or Fritten. Same mechanism as boutille becoming Buddel and Citroën Zitrön.
