Putin used to be a KGB agent in Crimea. You'd think he would've remembered that Ukraine was the weapons-makers for his precious USSR before he invaded... Ukraine’s role as a cornerstone of the Soviet military-industrial complex makes Putin’s decision to invade a particularly bitter irony. For decades Ukrainian factories and design bureaus—Kharkiv’s tank plants, the Antonov aircraft works, the missile and shipyards of Dnipro and Mykolaiv—produced many of the weapons systems that armed the Red Army and the Russian Federation. Those same industrial traditions, technical expertise, and institutional memory now underpin Ukraine’s ability to sustain a grinding defense and inflict punishing attrition on Russia. The aggressor that once drew strength from Ukrainian workshops now finds itself bled by the very industrial capacity it long took for granted, turning the invasion into a self-inflicted wound of historical proportions.
