When videos have a list of topics, I always want a list of the timecodes. So I made one!
0:50 1. Know why you're doing it
1:58 2. Chop down the biggest tree first
3:52 3. I'm so happy more industry vets are coming on here and discussing real design and dev advice. This is what we need more of on youtube because the general game dev space has been filled with novice hobbyist giving advice for too long.

Spreadsheets, yes! Every time I talk about spreadsheets I feel like I'm talking nonsense. People just don't get how easy and helpful it is. Collect your data, fill your columns, test your formula, tweak it to get the desired result THEN put it in your game. Way easier to visualise and understand what it does so you can fix it. I have like dozens of them for pretty much anything than can be solved with a formula.

On subject: chop down the biggest trees.

Typically when I have a new member in my crew, I tell them, this is your world, treat it like it's yours, it's your show, you paid for it. If you get lost, do the most obvious, and keep doing the most obvious. Eventually you'll be on the last task, because it'll be obvious.

Chopping down the biggest trees is definitely great advice, since I'd probably be tempted to do the easiest parts first. But it makes complete sense, which also makes prototypes a great thing to work on first since a prototype contains the basic mechanics for your game without all the extras. So a prototype kinda kills two birds with one stone.

I'd suggest if you're looking for "new" look at the old - during the 90s, we kind of refined games into what we'd call Genres, and... we kind of lost a lot of things - especially in the AAA space, but there are so many great ideas from that era that with a paint of modern game design could become something really different.

its so refreshing seeing someone in the field take the time to give helpful advice instead of how to video with no explanation.

thank you. i love the stephen king tip, carving out a block of time every day—i could peck away at my projects. i love the tree cutting tip too. largest tree first is something i have always done, but did not realize how important it was... some of those small trees won't ever need to be cut down!
