  I work in Psych Care, I can confirm there is a huge increase in patients during the holiday season, but especially Christmas. Right now is our busiest time of year where are patients are most at risk of harming themselves so we’re all working overtime to keep them safe for the holidays. <br><br>It honestly makes sense people would be more depressed around Christmas: it’s a holiday dedicated to family time and gift giving, set in the coldest and darkest month of the year. For people who don’t have good family lives, Christmas can be very triggering for them because it’s not only a holiday where you feel obligated to be around you family, but the emphasis on that aspect of togetherness you see in movies and in real life examples around you can turn someone bitter very quickly because it can almost feel mocking to that person who may not have that same dynamic. <br><br>One thing people also don’t realize is that people who are homeless tend to either intentionally get themselves admitted to psych facilities or arrested for petty crimes with minimal sentences because it’s better than being on the streets in the cold. If you are arrested or institutionalized you are guaranteed a bed, 3 meals a day, medical care, and a roof over your head during the winter months, which can be hard to come by since shelters are often at capacity. It’s actually a serious issue that we come across pretty frequently, and is largely due to the fact that shelters and other programs that work with the homeless are so underfunded, so please go donate to local shelters or volunteer in some way if you can! If you call local shelters they also are more than happy to let you know what kind of things they would appreciate being donated, such as clothing and hygiene supplies, and they always appreciate any help they can get. <br> <br>Another things is that once Christmas ends it’s followed closely by New Years, which for people who are severely depressed the idea of still being alive for another year can be extremely upsetting and push them to make an attempt before they have to start a New Year feeling alone and miserable. Be sure to check in with your loved ones yall, because you never know when someone could use that kind of care shown to them. It’s hard to understand how much you mean to someone when you are struggling with mental illness, and you often view yourself as a burden on others, so that small moment of caring can mean the world to that person because it reminds them that people care about them and that they are not alone. <br><br>Sorry for the essay here, this is just something I personally care a lot about and any excuse to bring it up I will jump on because it’s such an important topic. Be kind to each other y’all, and more importantly be kind to yourself ❤
