Road House (1989) is already a fever dream of mullets, bar fights, philosophy, and denim-clad violence—but our episode for it might be the most ADHD thing we’ve ever put on the channel. And honestly? If you’re here for us, you’re gonna love every chaotic second. If you’re here for a calm, structured film analysis… uh… sorry in advance.

Patrick Swayze’s Dalton is still the king of coolers—yes, cooler, not bouncer—an enlightened bar-side monk with a philosophy degree, tai chi abs, and a mullet that legitimately should’ve been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. He rolls into the infamous Double Deuce to clean it up, and immediately starts handing out roundhouse-kick life lessons like he’s the Socrates of Southern dive bars.

The movie itself is pure, beautiful nonsense. Sam Elliott saunters in halfway through as Wade Garrett, basically the patron saint of leather vests and gravelly wisdom. Kelly Lynch plays Dr. Clay, the ER doctor who looks like she walked out of a perfume ad but somehow lives in a town with one bar, three stoplights, and a local tyrant. And speaking of tyrants—Ben Gazzara as Brad Wesley is an absolute menace, a man so cartoonishly evil he uses a monster truck as a personality trait.

We spend the episode bouncing between laughing at the absurdity, appreciating the legitimately awesome fight choreography, quoting the legendary “Be nice… until it’s time to not be nice,” and spiraling into side tangents that have NOTHING to do with the movie. It’s chaos. It’s peak unmedicated energy. It’s Road House filtered through two people who love cinema, Swayze, and unhinged commentary in equal measure.

But the truth is—Road House is a rare kind of magic. It’s macho, campy, weirdly poetic, and completely self-aware. And if you’re here because you enjoy watching Tara react to Dalton ripping out a guy’s throat while Kevin cackles and talks about being scared of pool halls? You’re in the right place. If not… well… that’s on you.

Dalton said it best: be nice… until it’s time to not be nice. And we were not on our best behavior in this one

I see a Roadhouse Reaction and I'm all over it like a stuffed polar bear on a chubby henchman.
Making Swayze an awesome bad-ass, then topping him with Elliott is an '80s gift to us all.

Terry Funk, who plays Morgan, was quite the wrestler. As stated in the video, both he and his brother; Dory Funk Jr., were both former NWA World Heavyweight Champions. Both competed in the WWE, and were a part of WrestleMania 2 in 1986, and were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009.

Funk wasn’t a stranger to Hollywood by the time he made Roadhouse. He appeared with Sylvester Stallone in Paradise Alley (1978); which Stallone directed, he had a small part in Over The Top (1987), and he served as the fight choreographer for the street fight between Rocky Balboa and Tommy Gunn in Rocky V (1990).

It was after this film, Funk returned to wrestling in the WCW; where he had a memorable rivalry with the legendary “Nature Boy” Ric Flair competing in several matches. One of them was an “I Quit” Match that many wrestling fans call as one of the best of Funk’s career. He then went to ECW, where he got the moniker of “Hardcore Legend”; competing in extreme matches that involved fire, barbed wire, or metal chairs.

Terry Funk was a legend. (RIP)

If it was just an action movie, it wouldn't be so good. Swayze' performance as Dalton is what makes the entire movie. A philosopher keeping cool while thugs try to intimidate is what lifts this movie above the average.

I love how this movie takes place in a parallel universe where coolers are world-famous celebrities and badasses on par with SEAL Team Six.

"Road House!" - Peter Griffin (Seth MacFarlane) Family Guy (1999)

Fun Fact: According to Kelly Lynch, whenever Bill Murray sees her sex scene with Patrick Swayze on television, he calls her husband, Mitch Glazer, to tease him about it.

Music Enthusiast Fact: The band playing at the start of the movie is Cruzados. After the band disbanded, lead singer Tito Larriva formed the band Tito & Tarantula, which is the band that played at the Titty Twister in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996).

Roundhouse Kick Fact: According to Sam Elliott, all of the actors did their own stunts. They were all trained by Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, a holder of nine black belts in nine different disciplines. Urquidez believed so much in Patrick Swayze's abilities, that he suggested Swayze become a competitive kickboxer.
