This is Scott, the owner of this CDP-970. Hats off to Graham for another excellent video! I also enjoyed the LED fix and the disc programming. I think the tray may be zinc, but I'm sure someone knows the answer.

I found this player on eBay as a parts only machine, and decided to take a chance on it because I wanted to hear the BB PCM58s. I targeted the 970 for the combination of PCM58s and an easy to source KSS-150A/210A pickup. I think it sounds great. I found an original remote (RM-D570) at a reasonable price which makes operation nice. I didn't send it because I was trying to fit the spare parts into the box.

Thanks so much to Graham for saving another vintage player!

I love watching you work . Really appreciate how methodical and detailed you are . Your commentary is just right too, no hyperbole.

Hey Graham, great repair! If you have the Sony remote, entering a custom file is much easier because the remote has a full selection of buttons of alphanumeric characters and numbers, so you can easily label a disc quickly with the remote. I had the Sony CDP-C70 5 Disc changer in the late 80s and that was the first model that featured Custom File, and I loved it. I now have a Sony CDP-C910 10 disc and CDP-C701ES, both with Custom File, and later models like these had a 'dot matrix' type display so the Custom File text was much easier to read compared to the older displays like on this 970 model. It was a cool feature, before the CD-Text feature.

imagine a time at sony when in a single years lineup you had the cdp-170, 270, 370, 470, 570, 770, and 970... and then the ES line above that... and the R-series seperate transport and dac at the tippy top... how the mighty have fallen. 😔

Fun fact: the disc file system at least on some units has a programmable slot for the "no disc" situation, so you can change the display from "No disc" or similar to "FEED ME", which is fo course what I did on mine.

I enjoy the fact that you do not use flux unnecessarily. I watch a lot of techs online slathering on flux creating cancerous fumes for absolutely no reason. Well done. Another W.

After just watching Techmoan buying dvd and blu-ray players to play cd's and having him rant about the lack of basically anything on those players and then seeing this player, made me realise how good we actually had it.

This player was from the (in my opinion) peak Sony era. The effort that went into that little volume switch alone, which most of the people wouldn't even bother to use because the variable output was deemed of having lower quality, is impressive.

Those premium (upgraded) plastics are often glass fibre reinforced plastics. They are indeed very good materials!
