  A distant relative of mine from Italy was murdered by Simbas during this time. A non-combatant, he was an employee of a mining concern. It didn’t matter, the Simbas killed everybody. Author Linda Smith grew up in border town Kitwe Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). In her excellent book she described how as a little girl she witnessed bloodied and terror stricken refugees pouring across the border. Many driving “big left-side drive American cars” and often carrying their dead with them. It must have been hell.

  Thank you for covering this so well. My gran was born in the Congo to her missionary parents in the 1940&apos;s. She has some incredible stories about the place and she loved the Congo. They had left before the civil unrest but she still knows people who were more closely affected.
