Right on. Too many players don't react until the ball crosses the net. Some even when it bounces!

Great commentary from a perspective most coaches overlook. I knew a guy age 86 years ago who was a good player. He always beat players  30-40 years younger than he was. His anticipatory skills were outstanding! People thought he was fast overlooking his slow feet movement. He had it all as you mentioned because he anticipated so early where the ball was going to be.  Many times he was in the proper position to hit before the ball got to him. A great sight to see.  Keep up the great tennis insights.

I am 63 and have been playing daily with weekly lessons for last year. I have gotten into the rhythm of moving my feet and split steps as much as possible and really notice the difference in successful returning vs when I don't. But as Teacher Teacher says, you got to be relentless because its easier to just stand there and wait for a ball which is a recipe for disaster. Thanks Coach!

i was watching alcaraz vs sinner and i paused it. before sinner even hit the ball, carlos was sprinting towards the exact spot the ball  was going to land. he's not superhuman fast, he is fast and he has insane ability to read the opponent's stroke.

Great insight... I lost all of two matches yesterday and here is the reason why. Decision was late because I couldn't focus what opponent is doing. that makes my footwork lazy. that makes spacing problem with incoming ball. that produces late preparation. thanks for great lesson.

It's the relentless need to be in the best position to play the right shot because you love how it feels!

This is what I’ve suspected. There is a huge mindset component to good footwork. Great commentary on the subject and this viewpoint is never talked about, at least not like this.

Great advice! Also loved him in Breaking Bad, BCS, and Nobody 1 and 2.

I like to think of “footwork” as organization - you’re organizing position to the ball, the body to strike the ball, and your position in the court to play the point.
