  That was so much fun! Total blind analyzing. Is so interesting to see how we do see interpret the world around us to our experiences.   I'm sure someone probably already said this, but James and his Father were both British Army Officers and whenever either was deployed they would say to each other, "I'm not your Son you're not my Father. We're just two men saying goodbye."

  I disagree with her. James doesn't say they don't have mistakes, just that there's no need to forgive or forget them. They're just water under the bridge, because they have more important things to focus on.

  The immediacy of the situation needs to be understood. The elder Mr. Blunt had terminal stage 4 kidney disease, made more urgent by the fact that he had previously been a kidney donor and only had the one.<br>This was further complicated by his having a rare blood type, which made donor matching very difficult.<br>They were not able to find a suitable donor and time was running out when this video was recorded.<br>James Blunt was looking at losing his father imminently, and his pain and tears were very real.<br>Since both men were British army officers and James entered manhood with his father as a superior officer there were high expectations and discord between them. <br>James has spoken of this previously. It&apos;s easier to understand these lyrics in that vein.<br>They&apos;ve had a rough relationship at times, but soldiers always stand up for each other.<br>&quot;I&apos;m not your son. you&apos;re not my father&quot; is simply a stated desire to put aside their prior discord.<br>An &quot;let&apos;s not spend the little time we have left rehashing old greivances&quot; statement.<br>They&apos;ve had issues in the past. But &quot;when your demons come, call on me Brother and we&apos;ll fight them together&quot; is the creed. Once a battle starts, soldiers don&apos;t fight for god &amp; country. They fight for each other first and foremost. I believe that the &quot;it&apos;s my turn to chase the monsters away&quot; line boils down to their willingness to cover the retreat of a fallen comrade. <br>This is the thing which these ladies refer to as the tangible background dynamic.<br>You love the father by leaving the light on, folding the clothes on the chair and putting your hand on his arm as a comforting gesture.<br>You honor the soldier by saying &quot;Your watch has ended, Sir. You are relieved. You&apos;ve taught me how to fight them, and those monsters shall not pass.

  Rosalie you make a great point about the father being a monster, My dad was one of those and there never was a moment where<br>I felt the need to help him as he made sure he was never there for me. As a child growing up in state institutions it was my job as<br>a child to chase the monsters away. I feel there aren&apos;t enough studies of children who have been exposed to long term childhood<br>trauma.

  The phrase &quot;I&apos;m not you son, you&apos;re not my father&quot; came from their time in the military when they would deploy. They would say this to make having to leave a little easier
