Breeding Class Sneak Peak with Purple Caper!

This video is a one-hour excerpt from a longer class on Breeding Techniques with Purple Caper Seeds. 🌻If you want to get the full class, you can subscribe to the Patreon here: Patreon: Queenofthesungrown or buy the class from the shop here: https://www.queenofthesungrown.com/pr... The session covers various aspects of the breeding process, from terminology and parent selection to pollination and seed management. Key Topics Covered: 📜Terminology and Definitions The session introduces essential breeding terms including F1, F2, F3 (filial generations), BX (backcross), S1 (self-pollinated), and IBL (inbred line). The importance of understanding homozygous versus heterozygous traits is highlighted, as is the distinction between polyhybrids and true F1 hybrids, the latter of which are noted for their vigor and stability. 🌱Selecting Breeding Parents Frank shares his extensive experience, emphasizing the importance of rigorous selection. He suggests that home breeders should focus on quality and personal preferences, while noting that professional breeding requires a balance of stability, yield, and market demand. Traits to consider when ruling out plants include signs of weakness, susceptibility to pests or mold, and unfavorable hermaphroditic traits. ✨Pollination Process The video details methods for controlled pollination, stressing the necessity of preventing unwanted cross-pollination. Frank explains his process of using stored pollen, often diluted with non-bleached rice flour to ensure efficient distribution across female pistils. Optimal pollination timing is discussed as an equation based on the plant's known flowering duration. 🐝Nutritional and Environmental Management The importance of maintaining an optimized nutritional regimen is discussed. Frank notes that plants may require an increase in overall nutrient dosage (approximately 25%) during seed production. He also touches on the use of carbohydrates, silica, and the importance of ensuring the plant remains healthy (dark green) throughout the process to avoid developmental issues in the seeds. 🪴Harvesting and Storage Seed harvesting involves hanging the plant, followed by a careful drying period. Frank underscores the importance of ensuring seeds are completely dry (monitored by weight loss) before long-term storage. Recommended storage involves keeping seeds in a refrigerator and pollen in a freezer to maintain viability. ✅Ethical Considerations and Industry Outlook The conversation addresses challenges within the breeding community, such as intellectual property concerns and the prevalence of misinformation. The speakers advocate for honesty, transparency, and building community through mutual support rather than engaging in industry "nonsense." #OrganicGrowing #RegenerativeAgriculture #LivingSoil #SustainableGrowing #SoilHealth
