i like that the deathwatch are a huge student exchange program for space marines where they get to try out a bunch of illegal weapons and learn forbidden secrets. there is something inherently fun about them.

The Deathwatch kneecapped the Eldar so badly it probably left the Necrons as a whole fuming over the fact they weren't the ones to do it instead.

The Black Shields of the Horus Heresy were loyalist factions of traitor legions who denounced their primarchs and fought alongside other loyalists.

The fact I can have a dark angel and salamander be best friends and comrades is what makes the deathwatch so cool imo

Fun fact: the Deathwatch is also the protagonist of the Deathwatch pen-and-paper role-playing game, created by Fantasy Flight Games. The system is old and cumbersome, but it allows you to play Space Marines with a novel-like power level. I personally saw a kill team take down a Hive Tyrant, four of them, and no one died. A couple of the soldiers with them fainted from fear, but otherwise, all was well.
