I've got one more - use earplugs. The constant noise of the wind will fatigue you over time - plus it's TERRIBLE for your ears. Hearing damage is cumulative, by the time you notice it, it's far too late. Use earplugs.

I'm 72 and still riding every day I can. I've done a coast-to-coast 30-day run, and a successful Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000. Here's what's made the biggest difference for long-range comfort and safety for me: 1] Hydration. Water and electrolytes on a regular schedule, never more important than in the desert or other high-heat environments. 2] Riding suit. Right fitting, high-function gear make a big difference. I am a huge fan of the Klim gear -- Kodiak suit for colder/wetter weather, Latitude suit for most of the season, and the Induction setup for hot weather. On my long coast-to-coast trip I wore the brilliant Aerostich one-piece suit which allowed me to wear lightweight technical pants or shorts underneath affording superior walking around comfort when off the bike. 3] Man-Machine fitment. Custom seats, handlebar risers, footpeg positioning, highway pegs, proper adjustment of the brake and clutch levers... all make a big difference. 4] Fitness. Staying in shape, starting with core strength, is vital. Strong core, weight training, and cardio fitness, in that order. Doing even a little bit of this is fantastic and makes a difference you will feel on the road. 5] Entertainment. On long long rides, slogging in 400 - 500 miles a day, having some great playlists and audiobooks can be a game-changer! 6] Pacing. Take regular breaks. Re-hydrate. Stretch. Check the bike and gear loading. 7] Nutrition. High protein, high-fiber options as possible. Avoid fats and sugars. Replace caffeine with electrolytes. Avoid alcohol as you can the night before a long day in the saddle. 8] Friends. Having companions on the trip, and being able to communicate bike-to-bike, is huge. Makes a long day feel shorter, and exponentially improves one's safety margin. 9] Medic/First Aid training and gear. I always bring a purposeful Trauma/IFAK/Boo Boo Kit on bike. Sometimes, a simple bandaid or bottle of eye drops can save the day. Hopefull you'll never need the tourniquet or Israeli bandage. 10] Something to smile about -- but the bike provides that for me every time! Stay safe out there...

Just had a 280 mile day excursion to meet my brother for a chat. Perfect weather. Enjoyable mostly, but still an endurance for a 70 year old.
I knew I would be shattered the next day.and I was.
I’m grateful I can still do these things. Many can’t at our age.

Also, don’t eat heavy foods. They will make you want to take a nap. If I stop for lunch, I usually have a salad or something light.

As a former police motorcyclist I am pleased to have found your channel. Good advice from a rider who knows his business and who has a wealth of experience.
Now 82 yrs old I have sold my classic Norton and my Honda 600 CBR due to reduced reactions needed for safe and enjoyable riding. I now have a Enfield Bullet, ideal for relaxed riding style. Your advice is sound. Keep up the good work.

I did a 15-day solo Rajasthan riding trip in Feb. I started exercising from the third week of Nov. I have lower back and sciatica issues. That needed resolving. I specifically targeted core, lower back, hamstring, and glute muscles. I also started resistance band workouts to strengthen my overall body. That made a huge difference compared to my previous 15-Day Kerala trip when I came back with severe back and shoulder pain and fever. The next day, I could not stand straight. I was stiff like a POGO.
Staying fit and healthy has safety implications, too. The pain can distract you at the wrong time. In fact, now I continue to do resistance band workouts, and I am stronger than last year. My Rides are fun, long, and safe. Recently, I have added mountain hiking to the mix. All good.
I am 57 and think I can ride for another 15 years if I keep fit.

Thanks for the tips!

In my younger years (a long time ago) I would visit friends 250 miles away and ride like a Bat Out Of Hell! Once there I'd fall asleep for an hour or two before we could do anything. I eventually learnt to take it easy, ride smoothly and take short regular breaks. The journey might have taken half an hour longer but I arrived happy and fresh ready to do whatever we were doing. So in the long run slower was actually quicker.

As Clint Eastwood said (Dirty Harry) a man's got to know his limitations!

Thank You !! At 74 I still travel to Italy more or less regularly. There's one thing that I might add to the - very important and valuable - first tip of getting "loose". One movement releases most of the tension out of hands ("death-grip") and body: As You blow out actively lower Your shoulders, kind of "let them fall !!" I (try to) do this especially on challenging winding roads with lots of "tornanti" sometimes before every corner; actively telling myself :" Shoulders down !!" It not only takes the tension out of Your shoulders but also out of Your hands, Your lower arms (You cannot ride a curve safely with stiff arms and a death-grip !!) and most important out of Your head !! As You say, it makes the bike more stable and ensures You and the bike being one piece.
Thank You again for these valuable tips that make bike-travelling easier and more enjoiable. Knowing these tips I still enjoyed watching it and keeping the tips present.

8:03 Tip 4: Take a break every hour. This is why I stopped riding in groups. Two local clubs here, each will go for 6 hours with only a lunch stop.

I'm 68, trained to ride whilst in the RAF in operations (1976) but now live in the South Australian Outback (well I was an Aussie in the RAF). I know all about heat and riding in it, here its not uncommon to ride with a towel slightly smaller than a Tea Towel soaked, thrown in the freezer and left for a few hours. Then when you go for a ride thrown around your neck under your jacket to help keep you cool. You normally carry 3 - 4 of them (the rest in a self sealed bag in the top box with an ice pack). It helps to keep you cool in 42 - 50c temps out here (that's no joke either). Hottest I've ridden in here 55c and thought I was in hell. Coldest the Artic Circle with the RAF (work it out well into the minuses), from one extreme to the other.
