🇨🇦 Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. A few U.S. senators crossing the aisle to vote against the tariffs doesn’t suddenly mean America has abandoned the tariff strategy.

Some politicians are under enormous pressure from their own voters and businesses because these tariffs are hurting their states. And with an election approaching, of course some politicians are going to distance themselves from an unpopular policy.

But that doesn’t mean the underlying support for tariffs has disappeared.

That’s exactly why Canada has to be careful. What happens after the election? What stops the same politicians — or the next administration — from putting tariffs right back on once the political pressure has passed?

Canada cannot build its economic future around the hope that Washington will suddenly become predictable.

We need to diversify our trade, strengthen our relationships with Europe and other markets, and make ourselves less dependent on whatever political mood happens to be coming out of Washington.

Temporary political relief is not the same thing as permanent security. Canada needs a long-term strategy, not another promise that everything will be fine after the next vote.

The PM also referenced the USA demand to have future Canadian trade agreements subject to a US veto! Another demand was to void French language streaming requirements. Is Canada a sovereign country or not? Canadians say those demands were unacceptable.

They're called Premiers, Mr. Lindsay. Not governors.

This was a good grown up conversation. I think the angle that is missed here was the actual effects of integration in Canada, which has turned it into a branch economy. I think Canadians are angry because this type of subordinate system weighs on people and stifles ambition. The US overplayed its hand and Canada has re-found optimism I haven't felt before. My guess is that it will make Canada more independent and much more thorny

“There are occasions when it pays better to fight and be beaten than not to fight at all.”
― George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia

Having said that, Canada is not going to be beaten in this, but we are forced to fight it. We have no choice. Our theory of "victory" doesn't involve defeating the USA. All we need to achieve our aims is to decouple from the USA, and prevent it from using our integrated economy as leverage to coerce us.

#GoodbyeUSA
#BoycottUSA
#CanadaEU
#Gripen4Canada

Canada sells high quality, low margin commodities. There will always be a market for these, and the US can be substituted as a customer.
Canada buys high margin manufactured goods. The World is lining up to sell these. The US can easily be substituted as the primary supplier of these goods.
So I say, suit yourself USA, then Canada will adjust itself accordingly.

his annexation threats and the glee with which 77 million MAGA -- including hoekstra, lutnick, vance, bessent, greer, navarro, kernen, tucker, beck, the entire fox echo chamber, various other media/admin stooges/goons + endless hordes of online luddites -- have delighted in mocking, defaming, coercing, meddling, insulting and threatening armed conflict cannot be put back in the tube. the damage is immeasurable and lasting. will trade recover? probably mostly. but this is no longer a relationship that assumes peaceful trust-based coexistence and mutual respect with overriding shared interests/objectives. when gavin newsom told CTV's vassy kapelos that he couldn't guarantee that free trade would return under a future democratic administration, we heard him... when admiral paparo stated that "so long as we remain interoperable within the alliance.... the notion of miliary action is preposterous" (ie F-35s and golden dome whether you like it or not)... but that ultimately, he "follows the orders of the commander-in-chief", we heard him... the veil has been lifted: trump is only a vessel for widespread, dishonest, disingenuous, ignorant, arrogant, mindless venom that we cannot unsee for at least the lifetimes of those old enough to have witnessed if firsthand. there will be life after trump... and it will be altered in fundamental ways, many of which we still cannot foresee.

Trump didn’t threaten to Annex Mexico but he did threaten Canada. I am glad Carney retaliated, I’m sick of the US thinking they can push us around! 🤨🇨🇦💪🏼

Because when Howard Leutnik says, "We don't think the Canadian should be making cars," what he's really saying without knowing it is, "We don't think the Canadians should be buying American cars." – Jerry Butts, Sept 2026
Anyone who knows how the original Auto Pact was set up knows this is true.

Utterly trivial, I know, but I find it amusing that a reference to "elbows up" came so close to a mention of the Gordie Howe bridge... when the phrase was originally from Mr. Howe, who famously used his elbows in retaliation to checks he found unnecessarily rough. I wish the phrase wasn't so relevant to Canada-US relations. (Or the bridge named after him.)

Something you all ignore is Canadians have never had a Prime Minister that would listen to what Canadians want them to do for Canada and Canadians best interests to protect our Sovereignty and rights .PM Carney is the first PM to actually listen to Canadians and care about Canada and Canadians and our indigenous people. We have never like how our government bowed to the US pressure to hand over our resources for less then their value .and this destroying our military because the US feared Canadian military and Canadians having any power . Well we along with Carney are taking back control of our country and our resources and infrastructure and refusing to give away for nothing anything . We have never fully trusted the US .sadly our former leaders never lis😢to the Canadian citizens .the owners of Canada 🇨🇦 they never represented Canadians interests or cared about protecting us .
