Kia EV3 Battery Degradation after 18 Months

I appreciate all of the videos people have posted over the years, and I have enjoyed through everyone’s experiences the reality of EV ownership as the vehicles have evolved over the last 15 or so years. While I understand everyone being fixated on battery capacity and remaining range as the battery is used and also as it calendar ages, one thing I wanted to point out is it is quite possible some of the variation being seen just comes down to how the programming is set up to estimate and or charge the vehicle along with the estimated range varying due to how the vehicle was driven over the last week or so. Every petrol vehicle I have ever owned that provided an estimated fuel range never showed the same available driving range every time I filled up the vehicle. City driving compared to highway speeds caused different estimates, and in the winter the range was decreased massively which is normal, engine fuel system vary the air/fuel ratio based on a few parameters and due to temp and air density run a much richer fuel/air ratio when cold. EV range is affected by temperature, some more than others partially based on battery chemistry the vehicle has as well as every other parameter one can think of. Every gas vehicle I have ever owned lost driving range over the years as engine parts wore and efficiency decreased, I think we are far too focused on losing a few percent of battery capacity each year, the reality with most EVs is that they will probably be crashed before the battery wears out, or the rest of the vehicle will wear out before the battery needs replaced. I realize it is a huge cost if the pack does need replaced, but honestly now with the cost of petrol cars an engine and transmission would cost the same and with the big recalls we are seeing at least here in the US for faulty engine issues I would rather have an EV that does not require any of the other associated maintenance a fuel vehicle does. Thanks for the video, much appreciated. Have a great day.

I recently charged up to %100 to drive 180 miles up to the Lake district and in ECO mode the range was shown as 417 miles. I was expecting it to drop quite quickly due to motoway speeds. Topped to to 90% at Rheged on the Tesla superchargers and drove the last 16 miles to the hotel. Car remained parked for 6 days then drove all the way home and arrived home at 31%. For the next few charges the estimated range dropped quite dramatically due to 3 hours driving home at motorway speeds. Ovre the next few weeks I went back to driving at a steady rate and the mile per Kw/h went up as did the estimate range which went back up to over 350. So the GOM is recalibrating based on speed and driving style. If you drive at high speed it will go down but don't panic and drive slower for a bit and everthing will be fine.

Nice proper long term data - thank you Brian. I'm a measurer too. The measuring tool might not be capable of this much precision. I'd round those percentages to 2 sig figs as the first thing. A second would be to graph them. Next lets hope an EV battery expert might comment here. Great work.

Hello, I swapped my eSoul after 86000 km [5 years] in for the EV3. Degradation of the Soul was none, battery was 100% Checked by the dealer. [Never fastcharged and never loaded the battery to 100%] . So these batteries do have al long lifetime if you take care of them. On the other side, on de dutch eSoul forum was a cabdriver who loaded always maximum. Drove after years still 500 km on a charge...... I'll stay on the cautious side. Cause I own this car and like drive it for as long as the garanty is there. Thanks very much for youre insides according the EV3.

Last week there was a EV3 at authorized service for regular 2 years check. It was at 130.000 km and battery health was %100.

Would be interesting to see a number of charging cycles you had.

  • @underpressure-z6y · 3 weeks ago

I've never had over 295 miles on a full charge, usually around 275. My car is the same spec as yours.

Cheers. Think the accuracy of the BMS capacity value isnt good enought to calculates something thats good enought the give a real value.
But - yes 1-2%/year, specially first year is a normal value thats plausible. We (not you in that case) will see later on in a few years. I track my EV3 too at any time I do a 100% charge because of a long-ride and lets talk about it in .... much later :-)

Is it an idea to check the data such as SoH and SoC with the API (hyundai_kia_connect_api)?

I know you changed you bev3 for an ev2 for financial reasons but do you think the ev 3 is a good ca?r

Hi, good video & a nice car you have. Question: Have you completed full & proper battery equalisation/calibration charges for your vehicle at suitable intervals? One or two of the things you have noticed about your battery, such as when charging, you mention it suddenly jumps from 98% to 100% in the space of a few minutes. This may indicate some battery cells are out of balance & need equalising. This perhaps may also be a reason for your GOM not showing 100%.

Many folks try to equalise their cars when using a smart charging package. For mostly all cars & power suppliers you cannot carry out an equalisation charge if your smart charge package is switched on as your power supplier simply shuts the power off at 100%. In addition Smart charging packages often stop & start at different times. Therefore no battery equalisation or proper BMS calibration will take place. Equalisation requires an uninterrupted charge.

My own MGS5 requires me to run my battery SOC down to the low battery warning before starting an equalisation/calibration charge. I must then SWITCH OFF smart charging & plug into my 7.2kw wall charger. I normally manually start the charge going. The charge must be uninterupted or the BMS won't equalise. I then leave it untill it stops charging. I've observed my car equalising at 100% using my chargers own app & this can take just 10 or 15 mins or half hour or more depending how out of balance the battery is. The voltage gradually steps down lingering at 200 then 100w. Afterwards my range is huge & my OBD reader shows all my battery cells are very much the same voltage. Please forgive the rambling but wanting to make sure we are on the same page with what is a good & necessary thing to do for the longevity of our batteries. Keep up the good videos & thanks.
