My local indy charged me the cost of the mot as it was pretty much all covered by that! I had checked all the levels, tested the brake fluid and done the pollen filter which cost me £9 for a genuine skoda one. This was at 4yrs old but only 18,000m on the clock.

I think garages are cashing in on EV drivers should be no more than an hour's work plus parts and fluids .£150 would be reasonable.

Regarding the road test, my previous EV I bought as an ex-demo from Arnold Clark and the price I paid included the first two services. Both times when I collected the car the work sheet had the box ticked for "Road Test (minimum 3 miles)", and both times I refused to take the keys until someone had actually done the road test; I could see on the app that it definitely hadn't been taken out during the service!

Cam autos in Glasgow serviced my tesla and motd it for £180. It was 4 years old with 42k miles. Done a great job.

I tracked my Hyundai Ioniq on its app Map when it went in for a service and it left the car park and was back 15 mins later!

Local service is Skoda/Seat/Cupra and it’s virtually impossible to get a work bill below £1500 for optional work

Very good and interesting real world video. In my opinion is that if you know your way around the basics of a vehicle either ICE or EV you won't be getting true value for money from the majority of franchised dealers. However, what you are getting (and this is the benefit) is the dealer service history box checked, a recorded safety check and possibly enhanced future resale value. Unfortunately what I can't agree with, and what I find scandelous, is a formal service document with box ticking that does not align with the technical aspects of the product. To be presented and invoiced against such is an insult to the customer.

I work at a Skoda dealer. I’m not usually a fan of dealers but I do have to say this. When you go to Skoda we run through diagnostics using a program called Odis. Odis is the diagnostic platform for all Volkswagen group cars, Audi, seat, vw and Skoda. It will list all the control modules in which there are quite a few. Any static faults are noted. We then check for TSB’s. These tell us what to do and depending on the problem we either fix same day or rebook. We also check for software updates. These could be anywhere on the control modules. These are done foc or little expense. The TSB’s also tells us to replace any parts that need changing during the warranty or sometimes outside of warranty. This is something that few independents can offer. Those that can sometimes charge you for updating.

I noted you saying an independents offer front brake cleaning and that the drum is sealed. The drum isn’t sealed and sometimes has to be cleaned depending on age and mileage. Yes we do check the 12v battery, brake fluid we do every two years. Is it worth it? For £50 I think it’s worth it but that’s me. £70 for a pollen isn’t cheap. But blue point isn’t as good a quality. I would have got mahle or Ernst or tried to haggle the parts dept. I wasn’t a big fan of Škoda but the Dan and elroq are brilliant cars. Enjoy it and if your ever down in Devon let me know

When you get quoted for a car service, ask the garage to breakdown the charges to Labour and parts. Any garage that cannot do this, ask them to explain why.

Dealers have a vested interested in charging what they always have. They're not going to offer lower costs. My EV is still under warranty, so I go to the dealer, but I won't once it's out of warranty. Even then, the last service (40k) was £240, which I reckon is cheaper than the equivalent ICE service. The next service will include £170 to replace battery coolant.

Useful information thanks. The pollen filter in my Mazda was located behind the glove box but it was quite easy to change and did improve the air quality in the car and reduce fogging of the windscreen inside in winter. I think it cost £17 for a replacement and there were no name brands that were cheaper still.
I'll be interested to see how you change the Skoda one. They do get filthy quite quickly and are worth changing every couple of years. Similarly the windscreen wipers that does seem a little more complicated than my previous cars that just involved grabbing it and unhooking the wiper blade.

As Dave states on “Dave Takes it on” the EV service is a money making exercise for Dealerships. Many of the items on the service sheet can be done by the owner quite easily, they are items Owners should be checking as a matter of routine and the cars onboard system are already doing many of these checks.
A good proportion of the items just simply take up time, very costly time, the service can be cut down to simply brake & suspension checks and an underside inspection & of course the plug in Diagnostics checks. Everything else is already being checked by onboard systems or routine Owner maintenance so effectively the labour time can be cut quite considerably therefore the cost can be saved.
