  I play video games because they make me happy. &nbsp;Petting dogs makes me happy. &nbsp;So I&apos;ll pet a virtual dog if prompted. &nbsp;It makes me happy.

  I have a dog. I don&apos;t need to pet a dog in a game. But I will cheer if the option to is there. I get sad if I can&apos;t pet a dog in a game

  If there is an option to pet anything, I will pet it -- don&apos;t care what it is. I&apos;m petting that eldritch pet golem if it lets me. Does it cost 3HP? I&apos;m still petting that hellhound because it clearly is coded to like it, and I want that assorted line of code to know I care.

  In &quot;Stray&quot; there is a meow button, and I got the achievement of meowing 100 times without realizing i did it so much, simply because i meowed in regular intervals while playing the game normally

  The mere act of petting a dog (or any other animal) IS a personal gain in my opinion ❤<br>In fact I&apos;m losing something if I&apos;m not able to pet the animals in a game.

  In BOTW, in the absence of petting, I crouch in front of the dog and spin in circles until it also spins in circles and makes pink bubbles. So even if there is no option to pet, I pet.

  Details make a game more alive. If you can&apos;t pet an animal in a game like you normally would in real life, or if the animal doesn&apos;t react to you in some way that&apos;s realistic, then the animal feels lifeless and robotic—which makes the game feel less polished. My favorite games are the ones with the most attention to detail and immersion.

  The 50% discrepancy of people who would pet dogs in games that won&apos;t in real life is probably largely due to the fact that 90% or whatever of dogs you encounter &nbsp;irl are owned by someone, and it&apos;s not always socially polite or easy to pet their dog.
