The Show That Banned Lip-Syncing — And These R&B Legends Proved It (1970–1990)

There was one TV show in the 1970s where lip-syncing simply wasn't allowed. Creator Burt Sugarman insisted every act sing live, in front of a real studio audience, with zero safety net — a policy confirmed directly in his own words for decades. This documentary counts down fifteen legendary R&B and soul performances from The Midnight Special that prove exactly what that policy meant. From the Stylistics sustaining an impossible falsetto cold, to Minnie Riperton's jaw-dropping live whistle register, to the full episode NBC dedicated to Marvin Gaye alone — this is live music history, verified, and it might change how you hear every one of these records.
