Just out of curiosity, how much does Carfax play into your purchase?

Everything he said is 100% accurate. CarFax is ONE of MANY tools to use to assess a used car.

I bought a 1999 Subaru Impreza wagon a few years ago from a dealer in Virginia. It had a "clean" CarFax but was obviously wrecked and not entirely fixed on the right side. Two friends of mine also bought cars that looked great with a "clean" CarFax, and later shops found collision repairs had been done to them.

Pro tip: Taco Bell smells can be remedied by replacing the driver's seat with one from a junkyard.

I bought a BMW online from what turned out to be a crooked dealership in North Carolina. Carfax was clean. and the dealer told me by phone that it had no mechanical issues. I specifically asked about the head gasket. When the car arrived in Kansas, the gas tank was bone dry (cheap dealer siphoned the gas out before shipping.) The front end had been damaged and cheaply repaired with pop rivets and a metal patch across the broken plastic showing, and there was copper dust floating in the radiator...a sure sign of attempting to fix a blown head gasket. The #3 spark plug was corroded into the block...also a sign of head gasket damage. So YES...Carfax doesn't mean 💩. THANKS for this video!!

Yup went to look at a used truck last year at a local used car lot. Carfax said no accidents reported. I got there and the truck had a huge dent in the front. The hood was actually buckled from the impact! So much for carfax!

I recently bought a 2023 Camry. After I started negotiating the price, the salesman and his "closer" swore up and down it had a clean Carfax, car had never been hit or had any body damage. I drove it, everything seemed ok. I opened the hood to look for over spray, etc; it was a bright sunny day and I couldn't see anything amiss. After purchasing, I drove it to my wife's office to show her. She doesn't have cataracts, and noticed that the driver's side fender had repair damage. I called the salesman, and he said "oh yeah, it was damaged here at the dealership. I took the car back, wanting to get my deposit money back. The sales manager told me that the car is not his problem, that I'm stuck with it, that I'm just like all of his customers in wanting something for free, etc. Called an attorney the next day, they are working on it. Never trust a dealership - and this is a large Toyota dealership in Southern California. It's sad that some dealerships are this crooked. They give others a bad name.

Agreed however, I wouldn't buy a car w/o it. The best way to tell if the car is good, pay for an inspection.

Several years ago I had a deer hit that resulted in $4000 to $5000 in damage. Some time later, I saw the Carfax for the car and all it said was that “maintenance” had been done. Carfax is only as good as what is inputted/inputted accurately into their system.

If people get their car repaired off the record with no insurance claim, it’s not gonna show up on CarFax.

The car itself tells you so much, have it checked out by a mechanic. I had a 2004 Dodge Viper, and when I took it in for service, they told me it was a Police DARE vehicle for a sheriff's office in CO, it wasn't on the car fax yet showed up on the service report at the dealership. Answered a lot of questions.

Ha, ha - I'm a CPA, and live by the motto, "trust, but verify!" I bought a used car in 2004, and should have had it inspected, beforehand. Major corrosion issues.. I bought a different used car late 2023. This time, I did research a local mechanic, and had an inspection done, before I signed the paperwork. 21 months in - no problems, except for a manufacturer recall.

My friend took his new Dodge truck back to the dealership for electrical issues multiple times. Come to find out they didn't put it into the system that the truck was there. Guess what, it has a clean car fax, because they didn't report the truck of having issues.
