At 86 I don't clean the house any more - I just keep it clean. That's good enough.

I clean guest rooms before someone stays and then when they leave. In between I completely ignore them

I’m one of 5 children. My Mom used this standard: clean enough to be healthy, dirty enough to be happy! Personally, I like put it away, give it away or throw it away mixed with my Moms standard.

If you don’t have too much stuff, this is not a problem.

I hired a cleaner. Every Monday I have a small list of things that need doing. I do 98% of the cleaning myself, but the cleaner has the tasks that I haven't had the energy to do that particular week. Some weeks I might get the shower scrubbed...some weeks it might be cleaning all of the kitchen cupboards...every week a thorough vacuum through the entire house. It works for both of us. I can leave the house and when I get home my house is spotless. I love my cleaner, sometimes he'll see things that need doing that I haven't particularly noticed...he's priceless!

Cleaning is my superpower. I tried to do crafts, painting, baking, but - nope.
I'm a clean machine. ❤

I have done room by room and task by task, all of my life. I like the room by room better. I do like the bedtime loop routine as well. Making sure people have their personal items in their rooms. Clean kitchen, clean sinks. So in the mornings, no one has to clean before you can even make a cup of coffee. It helps me mentally.

The older I get the less I care about a spotless home. I used to be a perfectionist, now good enough is fine for me. When I see that something needs attention I take care of it before it gets out of hand. Much happier.

Batch tasks - avoid switching tasks.
1. Short wind-down before bed.
2. Wipe spills immediately.
3. Keep a donation box.
4. Living room, bathroom, & kitchen get priority.
5. Morning sequence - make bed, open window, clean the table.
6. Give everything a designated home.
7. Work in short, timed bursts.
8. Keep supplies within reach, where needed.
9. Bring a little greenery indoors.
10. Have a meaningful reason to clean.
11. Reset seasonally - spring cleaning, autumn reset, rotate mattresses twice a year.
12. Build zones, not just rooms.
13. Share the cleaning with another person or task.
14. One focused deep-clean day each week.
15. Manage laundry with a rhythm.
16. Accept good enough as the goal. It's never permanently clean.
- The advice is given to start one habit for a week before adding more.

Ok, I'll never make the cover of Better Homes & Gardens, but I'm not gonna get shut down by the Board of Health either. I'm a 71yo widow living on my own. I realize that I do half as much, and everything takes twice as long to accomplish. Thought I was the only crazy one that keeps the dustbuster in a bin on a livingroom bookshelf. Love the idea of the donate bin. It is a hard and fast rule to clean up the kitchen as I go, and to never go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink. Morning is always easier to face when the kitchen is tidy. You've hit on a bunch of very workable solutions, and keeping a "to do list" is essential. Weeks may pass before you realize that you haven't watered the plants, but the list will remind you. My goal is to accomplish at least one thing every day. This gives me something to look forward to and a sense of purpose. Thanks for all the good advice and suggestions. I work at my own pace, but still get things done.
