Hello, Old Piano Teacher :) [ @AnOldPianoTeacherExploresMusic ] ! Nightwish fan here, Your musical quest found me on a cool Wednesday evening.
Welcome [BACK] to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wembley Arena in 2015, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band.

About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.

Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):

" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, from 2001 to 2020. He announced his retirement from the band in January 2021. In May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and in August 2022, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

It's good to know that Tarja Turunen, Anette Olzon and Marco Hietala continued their own careers, solo or with other bands, after their departures from Nightwish.

For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the "Posts" tab in my main YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/posts

Ohh maaaaan. He skipped the end. Honestly one of my personal favorite parts of the song
I mean, if you're going listen to a song, why not hear all of it? The end is what this entire song is about.

The most entertaining reactions to Nightwish are professional musicians & professional vocalists.

The melody "strings" you've heard in the beginning is Troy playing an e-bow (plus orchestra).
For the best vocals I suggest the Tampere version.
For me taking time and digest the lyrics and exploring the many, many details is still a pleasure even after so many years.

As a piano player I enjoyed your reaction and analysis, especially comments about the tonal shifts used frequently to create the Nightwish sound. .Like use of harmonic minor and moving in semi tones. And chords that are classical in nature, like the Chopin comment. Floor has training first in rock and pop, then musical theatre with some opera techniques, and later some more in classical opera.
