Great subject content my good man. Many Youtubers have compared separates to an AVR... but not separates to an AVR/external Amp combo! I myself have an RZ50 with external amplification and wondered about what benefits adding a dedicated processor would do.
At the same time, your topic brings LOTS of incite from other home theater enthusiasts with their experience of switching from one to the other, thus bringing VALUABLE information to all faced with the same question.
Thank you very much for ALL the quality time you spend for us on this passion of ours, much appreciated!

Best regards to you and all my fellow HT enthusiasts,
PERRY

the main issues w/ receivers + amp can be highly frustrating - gain matching (exposes the noise floor - hiss) and electrical isolation (60Hz hum).
but as you said, when carefully done the experience can be amazing. if you stick to amps with gain switches or pots you can easily control the hiss - But not all amps have variable gain, especially "affordable" ones.
for the electrical isolation... IF you're going to be using RCA plugs get a Power Line Conditioner/UPS (not just a surge protector) as it will eliminate any grounding issue (that you just multiplied buying external amps).

Yes, you nailed it... thank you for going through all of this... I went from a Denon AVR 3808 with external amps to a Yamaha CX A5100 with the same external amps. The sound quality difference was not zero but minimal. I like the DAC better in the Yamaha and it is more flexible for using with multiple setups... but yeah... much more money (I bought mine used so not really)... and I DO like the PEQ in the Yamaha which kicks things up a notch. I would not necessarily recommend other people get a separate processor... especially when going about life piece meal... after all a decent AVR can do it all and be be upgraded with separate amps over time as funds allow (that is how I did it).

Great video. I always wanted to see a video explaining this. I think I'll just stick to an avr and amps.

Great stuff. I really appreciate you not gushing over "obvious differences" which is something we often hear. From a technical point of view, I'd love to know why it's often said there are big differences: I'd have thought the processors in both systems are doing the exact same job in sending signals to each speaker?

Great video. I have been wanting to buy the Anthem avm 70 8K. I think I'm going to purchase it now.

I love when a reviewer gives you a good answer. "Is it better? Yes. But, its also FOUR TIMES more expensive". I don't like chasing gear. I am buying a 525 Gen 2 Amp to finally have an external. Now I know that my Denon x4800h will be good enough.

I’ve been running a receiver and separate amp combo for awhile. I’ve always been in smaller apartments so space was a premium and this gave me a great compromise. The other benefit was I invested in a high quality multi channel amp and now 13 years later I still have the same amp but have changed my receiver 3 times as technology changed. Now that I’m in a house I’ll be going full separates and I’ll still utilize my older amp along with a newer one to fill out the rest of the channels.

As is often the case, one of your videos is quite timely for my real-world scenario! I have a 7.2.4 speaker setup in my dedicated basement home theater, and I was originally running a DENON-6700 AVR with a pair of Monster Power amps to drive the front three speakers and the two main rear speakers. Both power amps had failures to individual channel outputs, so I bought a Marantz AMP-20 to use in that "hybrid" scenario that you spoke of. For starters, I must say that the improvement in sound quality was immediate and profound! Of course, never being satisfied, I recently also purchased the matching Marantz AV-20 Processor to get me closer to the sonic perfection "Finish Line" that if nothing else, exists squarely in my head. I also purchased the separate balanced XLR cables, because I finally have the hardware that can utilize them. To conclude, I still haven't swapped out the AV-20 in place of the DENON-6700 yet, but I probably will in the next couple of days. That way I can do a true comparitive analysis. Whether or not I hear a noticeable uptick in sound quality is kind of pointless, because I am totally fine with my purchase of the separate processor. At this point in life, I'm looking much more for an "end-game" solution with all its subtleties, rather than settling for something that I consider to be less than acceptable.

Anyway, great job on the video as always!!!😢
