Resists defining evil, then in the next sentence gives the single most powerful definition (or characterization) of evil I've ever heard: "the point at which the gap between the way the world is and the way the world ought to be becomes so large that we don't know how to live in a world where that abyss opens up." Thank you!

RE: Progress is possible, but progress is not inevitable. Progress can be necessary. New problems—and old problems not yet solved—can make further improvement necessary merely to preserve what we value more clearly states what is so about progress.

RE: Evil. I agree is it wise to avoid defintions but not observations , like the child's "that's nor fair." which likely came from a dialogue about fair play. The what and the why of evil is where I went first, the split runs deeper than it looks. What she actually shows is that even the "what" isn't as settled as it feels — it just feels settled because we're pattern-matching to paradigm cases (genocide, torture, gratuitous cruelty) rather than defining the category. The moment you try to specify what makes those cases evil rather than merely very bad, the clarity evaporates: is it the suffering caused, the intention behind it, a disregard for personhood, the disproportion between act and provocation? Different theories answer differently, and none of them cleanly excludes edge cases (negligence, systemic harm, banal bureaucratic complicity) that our intuitions are less sure about.

The "why" fight is the more interesting one though, and Neiman's real contribution is showing it's not just an empirical disagreement — it's a disagreement about whether evil should be explicable at all. One tradition (going back to Leibniz's theodicy) wants evil to have a reason, because a universe where horrendous things happen for no intelligible reason is worse than one where they happen for a bad reason. The opposing instinct — sharpened after the Holocaust, and central to Arendt's controversial "banality of evil" — is that the drive to explain is itself suspect: explanation slides too easily into exculpation, and some acts should remain morally opaque rather than causally integrated into a story that tries makes sense of them. Given evil acts continue and perhaps worsen in both scope and frequency, I doubt we can make sense of them except for how witnessing them makes us feel. I do know firsthand witness, the kind in which you are an unwilling part of evil; where you smell blood, burning and rotting flesh and gasp for air takes you immediately to a place where explanation is impossible.

So the contention over "why" isn't really people disagreeing about facts — it's people disagreeing about whether explaining is a form of understanding or a form of diminishing.

If evil is the gap between is and ought, then the felt force of that gap depends on staying morally awake to it. Desensitization doesn't resolve the gap — it just stops you from perceiving it, which isn't peace, it's a kind of moral anesthesia.

So the contention over "why" isn't really people disagreeing about facts — it's people disagreeing about whether explaining is a form of understanding or a form of diminishing.

I've only ever read Moral Clarity, but I'm likely to buy Susan's new book, we really need people like her to help us through these very inhumane times. As an aside, I like to know how she feels about Rosa Luxembourg
