And the leader is MD/PhD with over two decades in this field. This is the kind of company we need to see more of.

If I recall correctly, they have still never directly outcompeted conventional hydrogen peroxide manufacturers on cost -- it's more of an eco marketing play to sell a "premium" product. Still, it's heartwarming to see start ups succeed in hard tech.

Of course, growing the corn required to make all that syrup has its own footprint, and in some miraculous future where the US government finally shutters it's ungodly corn subsidy, they might be in hot water. Would be curious to know their economic numbers

Love this! Wish YC would fund more companies like this, what's super sad is they only raised $4m for seed! Crazy to think there's software companies getting many multiples of that at seed

The next step of this is purpose-built de novo designed metalloenzymes for an array of activities. It could be a while before it branches from academia to industry at scale but, that's coming down the pipeline. By the end of the century, all of commodity chemical production could be independent of oil and nearly all could be happening at ambient temp and pressure in microbes.

There are major synbio challenges for scaling, like genetic stability and metabolic burden, but nature shows us that these challenges are tractable, and a matter of time and engineering. Lots of exciting stuff to come :)
