  Absolutely crazy to write this without talking about what batteries will do for grids. Search for grid forming inverters, or batteries entering Spain and you’ll see what’s coming.

  I work in the Energy Sector for 15+ years and I think the team did a great job with illustrations. Not the easiest subject to explain to people so they can understand and digest.

  Nice video, cute sense of humor.  I note that the use of synchronous compensators addresses a need to provide AC electricity matching not ‘second by second’ but at much more precise time scales.  Essentially the DC format electricity created by renewables has to be inverted into AC (sine waves) that precisely match that of the AC grid (matching the phase).  Thinking of an analogy, imagine that, for electrical (swinging) energy to be increased, every swinger on a swing set must match every other swinger, so that they are all at maximum height and on the same side of the swing set at the same time.  If they aren’t, then electrical energy is reduced, possibly with catastrophic results.  The job of synchronous compensators then is to provide a stable sine wave (set of matched swingers) so that new ‘swingers’ can match up to the others.

  The superconducting cable sounds like an expensive maintenance. More inflation for a system that already works. Distributed power is more effective then more expensive cables.
