Joe Cocker took a Beatles song, took it to church and made it his own brilliantly. He usually has a female chorus singing the call-and-response parts but they got stuck in traffic and weren't able to make it to the show in time so the band members had to fill the part.
I briefly met and chatted with him one day in '84 standing in line at the bank. He was a chill and kind man from that one encounter one I will never forget, and I have met loads of celebrities in my lifetime and background but Joe was a memorable one. Every time I walk past my old bank I have flashbacks of that moment.

There is another version of Joe singing this live, with Leon Russell on keyboards, and the female backing vocalists including the incredible Rita Coolidge. It's absolutely stunning.

72 year old boomer here - love seeing all these reaction videos. So much fun watching young folks having their minds blown.
A couple of fun facts:
Joe was usually deep into a case of beer before taking the stage.
The falsetto dudes were forced into singing when the female backup singers couldn't make it through all the traffic in time for the gig,
John Lennon said of Joe's version: It's his now.

We didn't "listen" to music in the 60's and 70's, we participated in it. Bands didn't "play" music, they felt it. It was just a different time. I was so lucky to be part of it.

Towards the end of his life, Cocker and his wife ran an ice cream shop. Makes me smile to think of this powerhouse performer selling sundaes in his golden years.

FYI, the backing vocals are a little iffy because the backing singers didn't make it to the gig so the band had to fill in..... Joe,s voice is enough. He didn't play an instrument.
