As a Bulgarian I can say that since we joined the EU together in 2007, we've become BFFs with the Bromanians.

I know several Romanian people who speak Spanish, and it seems like they learn it very easily. What always surprises me again and again is that they pronounce it perfectly; you can hardly notice a foreign accent at all. Speakers of other Romance languages, like Portuguese, French, or Italian—you can always tell by their accent as soon as they open their mouth.

As a little anecdote, I want to add that a Romanian girl I met told me she learned Spanish solely by watching telenovelas 🤗

A Romanian does not understand a single sentence in Russian, for example, but in Italian or Spanish more than half very easily without having learned the language before.

Romanian 'lumină' DOES share the same Latin root as 'illuminate' and 'luminous' in English. It also shares the same root with 'lumbre' in Spanish, 'lume' in Portuguese and Italian, and 'lumière' in French.

In Romania we actually call a computer “calculator”. And we also use “vedere” as view or sight.

As a Romanian who speaks Italian and a bit of French, and who has worked in both Barcelona and Portugal, I can say from my own experience that Italian is very easy to learn and understand. There are many similar words that can be easily guessed from context, and most of the differences lie mainly in the use of articles. As for French, although there are many similar words, it’s harder to understand and to make connections. When it comes to Spanish, I can say I understand quite a lot simply by associating the words with Italian, which I already know. The same goes for Portuguese, although it’s more difficult due to the accent. However, the biggest shock for me was Catalan, which frequently uses words similar to Romanian, pronounced almost identically. I was constantly surprised whenever I discovered a new word while talking to different people. Now, after living for a year in Portugal, I can say that when I read, I understand almost everything because many words are very similar to Romanian. Still, the accent continues to be a challenge. I’ve noticed, though, that Brazilian Portuguese is much clearer and easier to understand than the one spoken in Portugal.

What she said towards the end about similarities, slavic languages are not close to Romanian, we don't have enough slavic words to have it be similar. A romanian wouldn't be able to understand a slavic speaker besides a word here and there whereas we can understand spoken or written Italian, French, Spanish fairly easily without knowing the languages.

Romanian does have about 2500 words that sound exactly like Catalan. But in fact, the similarity is with another common romance language: Occitan. Usually short words like: foc, nas, viu, cot. We do know that after Dacia (where modern Romania is today) was conquered by the Romans, it was heavily colonized by veteran soldiers and people from all over the Roman Empire but mostly southern France (Occitania) and Italy. There is no surprise that Romanian sounds like the Romance languages. After all, a Romanian is called "român" in it's native language, from the latin "romanus" (a Roman). The Slavic influence is understandable. After all, they are surrounded mostly by Slavic languages. It is actually impressive they held on to their Roman legacy.
