  Most people don’t seem to realize but during Johnny’s turn Charlie is actually naming songs. Fire On The Mountain, Devil’s In The House Of The Rising Sun, Chicken In The Bread Pan, and Granny Does Your Dog Bite are all traditional folk songs that were usually played on the fiddle. You can probably still find most of them. Fire On The Mountain would probably be the easiest to find as my great grandmother use to have a Hank Willams record with it recorded on it.

  Just wanted to add a couple things. This is based on an even older idea about selliing your soul to the devil for musical skill. Robert Johnson  is alleged to have gone down to the crossroads to sell his soul to the devil for musical talent. He became a blues legend and wrote a song called "Cross Road Blues" that people think gives the details of this. He ended up dying at 27. Eric Clapton did a song about this called "Crossroads", and there is a movie called "Crossroads" where Ralph Macchio (the Karate Kid) and Steve Vai (an amazing guitarist!) take on the roles of a blues player and the devil respectively. There is a sequel to this song by Mark O'Connor called "The Devil Comes Back To Georgia" with Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart, and Travis Tritt in it.

  Many people do not know that Taylor Swift opened for this band when she was10 or 12 years old as a result of her winning a open mike night at a a venue where he was appearing at. Who could have known.

  Charlie was a class act...my boss' band opened for him in the eighties...after they completed their set he asked how did you enjoy your meal...they responded we didn't get a meal... he picked up the house phone and they witnessed him say ...i will not take the stage until i see these guys get their meal...class act

  Charlie Daniels came and performed for our base in Iraq in 2009. I was part of a smaller special operations task force that had our own compound on the base though, and we weren't able to go to the show he put on on the main base because we had operations going on at the time. His team found out that we weren't able to see the show and arranged instead to come over to our compound specifically the next day, when we could accommodate seeing him, because he really wanted to perform for the special ops guys. He put on a mini-show in our small dining facility just for us, which probably only held about 200-250 people at max capacity. After the show, he told us that instead of rushing off to his next gig as he usually had to do, he would stick around for as long as it took for him to greet each one of us personally, talk a little bit with us, and autograph either a picture or a guitar pick for us. I chose the guitar pick because my dad had recently started trying to learn guitar, and I thought that would be the coolest gift for him - an autographed guitar pick from a private performance of Charlie Daniels on a special operations compound in Iraq. I knew my dad (a veteran himself) would really appreciate the rarity of something like that, and he loved it. RIP dad.

  I remember hearing a violinist who reacted to this  explain that the devil's performance was not very difficult technically, while Johnny's piece was quite complicated, which is why he won

  At the time you could absolutely not say SOB on radio. It was altered to son of a gun. As a kid you really felt like you were getting away with something singing along to the record/tape.

  Charlie wrote this because of a bet, someone said to him a FIDDLE SONG would never be a hit LET ALONE A NUMBER ONE, Charlie said TEN GRAND AND YOUR ON, needless to say in 1976 he made good and won the TEN GRAND! God bless Charlie R.I.P 😎👍🏼
